Fundraisers Help Back to School Substance Abuse Awareness in Wayne Township

With the new school year upon us, the Wayne Alliance is hard at work organizing and implementing a series of back to school substance abuse awareness programs for students and parents. Programs are provided at no cost to the public and funded by a government grant along with various fundraisers held during the year.

Over the summer, the Wayne Alliance reached out to Wayne residents to assess the community’s needs to plan programs for the upcoming year and in preparation to apply for 2014-2017 grant funding. The Wayne Alliance also teamed up with Wendy’s at 637 Hamburg Turnpike to raise funds for future Alliance programs. A portion of sales raised funds for the organization. This fundraiser follows the Alliance’s collaboration with the Willowbrook California Pizza Kitchen earlier this the year.

To kick of the school year, the Wayne Alliance for the Prevention of Substance Abuse has several opportunities for parents, students, community organizations, and volunteers to become involved!

October is National Substance Abuse Prevention Month, during which the Wayne Alliance teamed up with Wayne Mayor Chris Vergano and the Board of Ed on October 7 to participate in a parent program featuring the Police Department, Wayne Township Public Schools, The Passaic County Prosecutor, Camelia Valdes and Judge Filko from the NJ Superior Court, Chilton and St. Joseph's Hospitals.

Later in the month, on October 16 at 7:30pm, the Alliance will host its 4th annual FREE Reality Tour program at Wayne Valley High School. The Reality Tour is an eye-opening production that offers parents and students a look at a day in the life of a drug-addicted teen.

In addition, the Wayne Alliance continues its Life Skills and After School Prevention Programs for elementary and middle school age students. The Alliance is currently inviting public and private schools, religious organizations, and community groups to host the interactive Life Skills after school program/clubs, as well as teachers and community members to instruct the classes.

The Wayne Alliance is excited to introduce Parent Round-tables beginning this Fall. The round-table is designed to empower parents. The events will provide a forum for parents to ask each other and attending experts’ questions during collaborative discussions regarding their concerns and experiences regarding their families.

Interested families are urged to visit the 35th Annual Health Fair taking place 8:30-11:30 on October 19th at Wayne Valley H.S. The Wayne Alliance enjoys the opportunity to inform the public at this important community event.

Alcohol and Drug awareness programs in Wayne are sponsored by the Wayne Alliance through funding from the Governor’s Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse (GCADA). The Wayne Alliance is part of the Municipal Alliance program, which operates in all 21 New Jersey counties. These organizations were created to provide grassroots volunteers an opportunity to make direct and effective change within their communities by producing localized solutions to individual municipality’s problems with substance abuse.
