Cameras will Catch Drivers Running Red Lights at the Intersection of Black Oak Ridge Road and Hamburg Turnpike

Tickets will be issued beginning Friday.

Beginning Friday, citations will be issued to drivers who fail to stop at red lights at the corner of Black Oak Ridge Road and Hamburg Turnpike thanks to cameras that are designed to catch violators 24 hours a day.

The cameras are designed to catch drivers who run red lights going west on Hamburg Turnpike and north on Black Oak Ridge Road. The cameras continuously operate. The intersection is a particularly busy one. Both streets are major thoroughfares in the township.

"The red light camera safer program's goal is to increase safety and prevent crashes by bringing awareness to driver behavior," said Lt. Paul Dring, traffic bureau commander, in a press release. "We are hopeful that the program will alert the driver and allow them to use better judgement when approaching a signalized intersection."

A warning period went into effect March 1. Until Thursday, violators will receive a warning in the mail, but, starting Friday, they will be mailed citations and must pay an $85 fine. Warning signs with "red light photo enforced" on them have been installed before the intersection so drivers know the cameras are monitoring the area.

The Wayne Police Department reviews and approves each violation before tickets are issued. Drivers who receive a citation can log on to www.violationinfo.com for information and to view the violation.

"The nice thing about this system is that people will be able to see themselves actually run the light so there will be no doubt that they actually did," said Capt. James Clarke. "They can't come back to us and say they never did it. They'll see the proof for themselves."
