The NJEA and national Teacher's Union is now more powerful than the Mining or Teamsters Unions of the 30's through the 60's. This is not just a local Wayne problem for us taxpayers, but a national problem as well. And nobody - NOBODY - in the political aisle wants to stand up to this non-stop, entitlement-driven, public sector money-tree due to fear of retaliation or alienation by this powerful Union and it's base. Especially those in the Democratic party. It has to stop. This country has spent over $1 TRILLION since 1967 (more than any other developed non 3rd World Nation) to improve our youth's Education - yet we still lag behind most of Western Europe and the Pacific Rim in the Math & Sciences. Is it because of the Teacher Union gravy train and unnecessary payroll? Looks like it is the case. Take a look at the documentary 'Waiting for Superman'. All teachers hate it cause it speaks the truth and questions the teachers' Union, which in many cases acts against the best interests of students and it's all about them. And it also addresses under-performing instructors who suffer NO disciplinary measures due to tenure! (The Rubber Room syndrome for example)......We cut the fat, have hiring and wage freezes, and you would see an instant 25% drop in our individual tax rate in Wayne.....Guaranteed.

ReplyGood valid points Scondo, however I would like to see some investigative journalism here on the poor victim though as well and see if any dots can be connected. Her and/or her family background? She have a job? One child only? Wayne native? Anything out of the ordinary? Very little in-depth discovery here, and not much more in The Record or No. Jersey.com. Why are the local police basically 'mum'? A brief mention of a disturbance at the victim's residence in 2001 and again in '11. Any connections? I don't expect Pulitzer Prize winning journalism, but a little gumshoe work would be appreciated to keep the public informed.

ReplyFact - since 1968 this country has spent over $1 trillion on Education improvements in this country; the highest of any non-third world country in the entire globe. Yet we STILL lag behind most of Europe and Pacific Rim countries in Math & Sciences. STOP the insanity! Please! In the classroom it should be nothing more than individual accountability, discipline, studying/dedication and family values coupled with the available teachers/teaching we are provided. Not Unions, unnecessary programs and entitlements! Will this country ever learn???

Hope - READ my comments above. I SAID WAYNE HAS a better quality of life than Clifton. I am referring to Clifton's commercial occupancy of properties. In addition, they have a PAID FIRE DEPT - and Clifton residents STILL pay less taxes than us Wayne residents.

ReplyIf our vacant commercial properties were filled to only 80% of capacity and retail expansion on Rt 23/Hamburg Tpk would be allowed, we would have tax rates like Clifton -- which is to say about $3-4K less than we all pay now on average as homeowners/taxpayers. AND we would still maintain our overall better quality of life and median income than what Clifton has. The Mayor should talk to Mayor Anzaldi of Clifton, don't ya think?? Maybe he and his city controller have an actual gameplan, which we don't seem to have. Plus, tax rates will decrease even moreso in Clifton after the Hoffman LaRoche property is redeveloped -- which is already in early planning stages. Seems our town-leaders are always behind the 8-ball and never proactive.

So - NJ, Cal., and NY are the bottom three in the USA in freedom. Any surprises folks? Considering all are Democratic Party controlled, Union, Nanny, and Entitlement driven states for decades now. And the GOP continues to get a bad rap. Unfathomable....
