Appeals Cost the Township Millions in Property Assessments Last Year

Wayne lost more than $27 million in tax assessments due to people filing appeals with the Passaic County Board of Taxation.

The township lost millions of dollars in property assessments last year due to taxpayers filing appeals with the Passaic County Board of Taxation. The township lost $27.6 million in assessed value last year. Residents and business owners appealed the amount their properties were assessed for. The town council reviews tax appeals on a regular basis. The total assessed value of the township is nearly $5.2 billion.  More than 1,100 tax appeals were filed in 2012. Dorothy Kreitz, the township’s chief tax assessor, said that only 39 appeals were filed a few years ago. Owners of properties that are assessed at less than $750,000 file an appeal with the Board of Taxation. Those assessed at more than $750,000 file an appeal with the state. The …

31-year-old man arrested outside mall for attempting to meet a minor for sex, authorities say.

A 31-year-old man was recently arrested at the Willowbrook Mall for attempting to meet a minor for sex following an online email exchange, the FBI said Thursday. Eric Fantau was arrested Jan. 15 in the Willowbrook Mall parking lot for allegedly attempting to meet a minor for the purpose of engaging in sexually explicit conduct, a press release issued by the FBI Thursday said. Fantau's town of residence was not provided by the FBI. According to a complaint filed in Manhattan federal court, Fantau posted more than 100 listings on Craigslist containing requests for sex with females, the FBI said. Fantau engaged in email communications with individuals who said they were female minors, authorities said. Fantau allegedly requested these minors …

Unless of course you have friends in the town government. I know one house near Alps and Ratzer that has done major renovations and also an addition and his taxe are lower then many houses that don't even compare to …   more ›

Willowbrook, Businesses, and the PAL are Closed

Family Halloween party scheduled for Tuesday at PAL will be rescheduled.

All activities at the Police Athletic League, including the family Halloween party scheduled for Tuesday, have been cancelled. The PAL will advise residents when it will be rescheduled. Public schools are also closed Monday. No decision has been made on Tuesday. District officials said they would immediately inform residents when a decision is made. The Willowbrook Mall will be closed Monday due to the severe weather threatening North Jersey. Willowbrook lost millions in revenue when it closed for more than a week last year due to Tropical Storm Irene. Doorways were tightly covered with black tarp and sandbags were tightly packed together to prevent water from seeping into the mall last year. Christopher Dudley, marketing manager for …

Town Center Developers Consider 'Alternative' for Site

Lawyer requests application for 49-acre site be withdrawn from Planning Board.

The Wayne Town Center will remain vacant for a little while longer. Wayne Town Center Associates (WTCA) has requested the Planning Board allow its redevelopment application to be withdrawn “without prejudice” as it evaluates “alternative opportunities” for the 49-acre site. Jerome Vogel, the lawyer representing WTCA, sent a letter to the board earlier this month requesting the application be withdrawn. Vogel states in the letter than an alternative site plan “will be presented in the reasonably near future.” Vogel did not return messages left for him at his office Monday afternoon. The application called for 750,000 square feet of building space to the once-thriving property next to the Willowbrook Mall. It was originally supposed to be …
