Food Pantry Opens at the YMCA

Wayne Interfaith Network moved its food pantry to the location earlier this year.

The Wayne Interfaith Network’s food pantry is now open and accepting donations at the Wayne YMCA. WIN held a grand opening for the pantry nearlier this month. The food pantry used to be located at Packanack Community Church. Officials decided to move the pantry to the Wayne YMCA earlier this year because there is more storage space there. Excess food was piling up at the church and would often be kept in the hallways and near the church entrance. About 60 Wayne families receive assistance from the pantry every month. “Being at the Y allows for added privacy and convenience for our clients,” Herb Schuman, coordinator of the food pantry, said in a statement in March. “The Y has been so cooperative.” To make a donation to the pantry call 973-…

YMCA Will Use New Gardens as Learning Tools

Organization hopes to use the recently constructed gardens to teach kids about healthy living and sustainability.

The Wayne YMCA will use gardens to help children gain a better understanding about food, sustainability, and healthy eating. Victor Alfieri, a sustainability advocate from Wayne, constructed the gardens this week. He has successfully lobbied for residents to keep chickens in their backyards and gives talks at the library about health and sustainability. “The biggest goal for us is to use them as a learning tool,” said Liz Youngstein, director of healthy living for the Metro YMCA of the Oranges, the organization that runs the facility. “I think kids need to know where they’re food comes from. They need to get involved and how to eat healthy. We’re hoping they get the kids to try more vegetables.” Youngstein said she plans on having the kids…

YMCA Hosting Healthy Kids' Day April 27

Day filled with activities for both families and kids.

The Wayne YMCA will host a celebration for Healthy Kids' Day on April 27. Fun, healthy activities will be available for kids and families, including a 5-kilometer fun run, family swim, and family kickball. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Spiderman will make two performances in the theater. There will also be inflatable bouncy houses, face painters, and free food. Representatives from St. Joseph’s Hospital, Chilton Hospital, and the Valley Health Medical Group will attend the event. GNGR Wins Rock Fest Competition (video)

Bands help give kids a safe night out, free of the temptation of drugs and alcohol.

The band GNGR won the annual Rock Fest competition on Saturday. The annual event is sponsored by the Wayne Alliance for the Prevention of Substance Abuse (WAPSA). It is designed to give teenagers and young adults a safe place to hang out without the pressures of drinking alcohol or taking drugs. Eight bands took to the stage at the Wayne YMCA. Each band played a few songs. GNGR won the $500 grand prize. Garrett Bell sings and plays guitar, Jake Lefkowitz plays lead guitar, Jake Miller plays bass guitar, Michael Barry is the keyboardist, and Nick VanLeer is the band’s drummer. “It was great to see how much Rock Fest has grown,” said Robbin Gulino, coordinator of the Alliance. “We were so pleased to have more bands participate than ever …

Eight bands will take to the stage for the annual Rockfest concert Saturday. The bands will compete for a $500 prize. The three-and-a-half hour concert is designed to give kids a safe place to hang out without being tempted with drugs or alcohol. The concert is being held at the Wayne YMCA. Doors open at 7 p.m. The Wayne Alliance for the Prevention of Alcohol and Substance Abuse is sponsoring the concert. Please come out and support a good solid event like this - its a total win-win-win for the kids, for the anti-drug programs and for the township itself. Interfaith Network Moves Food Pantry to YMCA

The Wayne Interfaith Network began looking for a place to move or store its excess donations at since January. The food panty used to be located at Packanack Community Church.

The Wayne Interfaith Network has relocated its food pantry to the Wayne YMCA. The food pantry had been located at Packanack Community Church. Personnel running the pantry began looking for another location in January. Church trustees met with WIN officials to see if there was another location they could store their excess food. Donations would often be piled up in the hallway and near the church entrance. Bands Can Perform on Stage for Rock Fest

High school musicians will have a chance to flex their musical muscles at the annual event.

Local high school bands can show their musical talents on stage at the annual Rock Fest. The annual event gives bands a chance to perform on stage and give kids a safe place to hang out without the temptations of alcohol or drugs. The Wayne Alliance for the Prevention of Substance Abuse sponsors the event. Hundreds of teenagers attended the event last year. Bands will compete for $500. Rock Fest will be held at the Wayne YMCA March 16; doors open at 7 p.m. Bands can send their audition videos to school resource officers Mark Dubois and Mike Zaccone at Wayne Hills and Wayne Valley high schools at mdubios@wayneschools.com and mzaccone@wayneschools.com.
