Softball Players Sign Letters of Intent

'This has been a dream of mine,' Niki Carillo said.

Two high school seniors fulfilled their dreams recently when they signed letters of intent to play softball at the collegiate level. Niki Carillo and Lyndsey Lichtenberger from Wayne Valley High School signed letters of intent last week. Carillo will attend St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. Lichtenberger will play for Queens College, part of the City University of New York. “This has been a dream of mine ever since I was a little kid,” said Carillo, a pitcher. “I’m a big fan of Jennie Finch.” Finch helped Team USA win a gold medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Lichtenberger will play at third base when she takes the field in college. She currently playing left field for the Indians. “For me, it’s all about the team,” she said. “If …

Students Honored for Musical Talents

Dozens of Wayne students were honored Thursday for being selected to various local, regional, and state bands and ensemble groups.

Several talented Wayne students were honored for their musical talents at the Board of Education meeting Thursday.  "The Wayne community, and our school system, have benefited from the pride and recognition that these students have brought to our town," said Matt Paterno, the district's high school music director. "We are glad our outstanding music students both recognized the opportunities they had been given for success and put in the hard work to realize their goals."

Hills' Academic Performance 'High', Valley's 'Average,' State Reports Show

Christie Administration released its new School Performance Reports for the 2011-12 school year Wednesday.

Wayne Hills High School academic performance is high when compared to other high schools in the state and Wayne Valley’s about average, data from the Christie administration’s 2011-12 School Performance Reports shows. Released Wednesday, the reports are a new version of the long-running School Reports Cards that have measured school performance on a variety of metrics since the 1990s. The new reports use many of the same sources of data such as student achievement, graduation and dropout rates, demographics and class sizes, but they also match each school up with 30 peer schools from across the state. District Mulls Whether Changing Grading Schemes is a Plus

'We want to do what’s best for the students,' Board of Education Trustee Laura Stinziano said.

District officials have discussed possibly changing the grading scheme at Wayne Hills and Wayne Valley high schools. Currently there are no “minus” grades on the scale. The highest grade, for receiving a 90 or more, is an “A.” The next are “B+,” “B,” “C+," etc. School board trustee Laura Stinziano said district officials have met with administrators regarding the proposed change. “We’re just taking a look at possibly changing it for the benefit of our students,” said Stinziano said. “We want to do what’s best for the students. We think that it could possible hurt some of our students when it comes to class rankings and grade point average.” Adding “minus” level grades, such as a “B-“ to the grading scale is one possibility. Relay for Life Team Selling Bracelets this Week

Team from Wayne Valley High School will be selling bracelets during lunch periods.

Kevin Hughes’ Relay for Life team, Keep Calm and Cure On 2013, is selling bracelets this week at Wayne Valley High School. Proceeds from the sale will go the American Cancer Society. Relay for Life is an annual student-run event that raises money for ACS. The all-night fundraiser held at Wayne Valley. Hundreds of participants walk the track at the school in memory of those who have been killed by cancer and for those who continue to battle the disease. The bracelets will be sold during the three lunch periods through Thursday; they cost $3 each. Lunch is held from 10:30 a.m. to 12:44 p.m. Schools are closed for Good Friday.  Hughes’ team has already raised nearly $3,400 for ACS this year. The Wayne Relay for Life event generated more than…

Wayne Day is June 9, Volunteers Needed

The annual Wayne Day, one of the biggest, most attended events of the year, is Sunday, June 9 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thousands of people pack the field at Wayne Valley High School for the annual family-friendly event. There is always a full-slate of carnival-like games, exhibits, and musical performances. There were inflatable bouncing plays areas for kids and members of the Wayne Volunteer Fire Department and the First Aid Squad demonstrated how the “jaws of life” are used to extract someone from a car at previous events. Dozens of local organizations, houses of worship, and businesses run stations and give away information throughout the day. Volunteers are needed to help during the event. 'The Wedding Singer,' 'Curtains' on Stage at High Schools

Wayne Valley students will present 'The Wedding Singer. Wayne Hills students to stage a performance of 'Curtains.'

Curtains will rise on two musical comedies this week at Wayne Hills and Wayne Valley high schools. “The Wedding Singer” will be performed at Wayne Valley High School March 21, 22, and 23 at 7:30 p.m. The play, which is based on the movie starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, tells the story of Robbie Hart, a wedding singer who is dumped by his fiancée but finds true love with a waitress. Tickets cost $12 for adults, $10 for students and senior citizens. “Curtains” will be on stage at Wayne Hills March 21, 22, and 23 at 7 p.m. A matinee showing will be performed March 23 at 2 p.m. The musical is about a murder mystery plot set in Boston in 1959. The star of “Robbin’ Hood of the Old West” is murdered during her opening night curtain call…

School Resource Officers May Return to Middle Schools

Reinstating three positions would cost the district $256,000.

School resource officers may be returning to the middle schools starting in September. District officials are considering reinstating school resource officers at the middle schools. Officials mentioned the possible move at a budget meeting Thursday. School resource officers are full-time police officers who work exclusively in schools. They receive special training to deal with children. They are taught to work with kids, counsel them, and help them work through any serious problems they may be experiencing. Up until a few years ago, an SRO was assigned to each middle school. However, grants funded the programs and when the grant money was cut, so were the positions. School Budget Presentation Thursday

Residents can ask questions after a presentation on the proposed 2013-14 spending plan is given at Wayne Valley High School.

The second of two public presentations on the 2013-14 school district budget will be held at Wayne Valley High School at 7 p.m. Thursday. Attendees will have the chance to ask Superintendent Ray Gonzalez and the Board of Education questions after a presentation on the budget is made. The school portion of the average homeowner’s tax bill could increase $205 if the budget is approved as currently constructed. The tax levy, the portion of the budget that is funded by local property taxes, is about $132.2 million. If everything remains as is, including programs and services, the district is looking at a $2.4 million budget shortfall. The Board of Education approved a tentative budget last month.
