Wayne Valley Holds Off Rival In County Baseball Tournament (video)

Indians jump out to a big lead early to beat Passaic Valley.

For Wayne Valley, advancing to the Passaic County baseball semifinals was anything but a walk in the park. But the Indians were able to hold off an upset-minded Passaic Valley team for a tough 7-4 win. The Indians scored five times in the first inning, then saw the Hornets threaten to erase that advantage time after time. Pitcher Vin Gleason hung in to finish the job, despite allowing 13 hits, thanks in part to some big defensive plays. "It was a gutsy performance," said Indians coach Jeff Hoover. “We made enough plays to win the game. We did what we had to do to win." Matt Marks made a running catch near the fence in the sixth inning with the tying runs on base to squelch a Passaic Valley rally. Marks also had a two-run double as part of …

Parents Concerned With Possible Changes to Student Grading

School district mulling several options, including adding 'minus' grades, using number grades and more.

Parents spoke out against making any immediate changes to the high school grading format at a special forum Tuesday night. The Board of Education and administrators are considering changing how students receive grades in an attempt to better reflect student accomplishments. However, parents in attendance expressed concern with making any changes and agreed that any change should only affect incoming freshmen, not current students. “Our intent is to ensure that all student achievement is properly represented so that they can maximize their future potential,” Assistant Superintendent Marysol Berrios said. “We want to be able to represent our students in the best, the most efficient, accurate, precise way possible.” For example, the current …

Special Meeting on Possible Grading Changes is Monday Night

Parents and students are invited to discuss the issue with education officials at a special forum.

A special meeting for parents and students will be held Monday night regarding proposed changes to how students are graded at Wayne Valley and Wayne Hills high schools. Education officials will host the meeting Monday, May 13 at 7 p.m. at Wayne Valley High School. District officials have discussed the possibility of changing the high school grading format earlier this year. Adding “minus” level grades, such as a “B-“ to the high school grading scale is one possible change officials have mulled making. There currently are no “minus” grades on the scale. “We want to see what parents and students have to say on the issue,” said trustee Laura Stinziano. “We want to have an open and honest discussion with everyone.” — Have a question or news …

Parents, District to Discuss Changes to Grading Format

Parents and students are invited to a special meeting May 13 to discuss adjustments to letter grades.

A special meeting for parents and students will be held regarding proposed changes to how students are graded at the high school. District officials will host the meeting on Monday, May 13 at 7 p.m. at Wayne Valley High School. District officials have discussed the possibility of changing the grading format for a few months. Currently there are no “minus” grades on the scale. The highest grade, for receiving a 90 or more, is an “A.” The next are “B+,” “B,” “C+," etc. Adding “minus” level grades, such as a “B-“ to the grading scale is one possibility. “We want to see what parents and students have to say on the issue,” said trustee Laura Stinziano. “We want to have an open and honest discussion with everyone.” — Have a question or news tip…

The way that the grading system operates at this time, it would be simpler to obtain higher grade-points if the plus system were eliminated entirely. The merit of the students should be viewed by universities in the most positive way possible. The board of education adding minuses to the grading system does nothing but hurt the GPAs and transcripts of its students! The BOE needs to grasp the …   more ›

All, I don't have a problem with him. My problem is with people who post that constantly bash our school system and how since Gonzalez took over, the system is going in the tubes. While I whole-heartedly disagree with the notion that our system is going down the tubes, it is evident from state reports that some schools have slipped, Valley being one of them. I think having a revolving door at the…   more ›

Friends of Michael Pascrell are selling T-shirts to raise money for the family of the Wayne Valley graduate who was killed walking on an on-ramp on Route 80.
