Parents and students are invited to discuss the issue with education officials at a special forum.
A special meeting for parents and students will be held Monday night regarding proposed changes to how students are graded at Wayne Valley and Wayne Hills high schools. Education officials will host the meeting Monday, May 13 at 7 p.m. at Wayne Valley High School. District officials have discussed the possibility of changing the high school grading format earlier this year. Adding “minus” level grades, such as a “B-“ to the high school grading scale is one possible change officials have mulled making. Program teaches children about staying safe at home and at school.
Safety Town, the Wayne Public School District's annual program for young children, will be held July 8 through 19 and July 22 through Aug. 2. The is designed to show kindergarten-aged students how to be safe at home, outside and while in town, and at school. Children who are eligible to attend kindergarten in September may participate in the program. Students will travel through a model town that includes buildings, streets, and traffic signals. Along the way they will participate in fun activities related to safety. Prior to graduation, each student will meet a policeman, a fireman, and go on a school bus. The program costs $55. Schools will be closed the Friday before and the Tuesday after Memorial Day.
The school district’s Memorial Day break will be a few days longer than planned. Two unused emergency days will be added to the school district calendar. Schools will now be closed on Friday, May 24, and Tuesday, May 28, an announcement on the school district website states. Schools will reopen on Wednesday, May 29. The district used all of its allotted emergency days during superstorm Sandy last fall. Upgrade is similar to the one the elementary schools received earlier this year.
The Wayne School District has launched new websites for the three middle schools. School announcements and upcoming events are prominently featured on sites for George Washington, Anthony Wayne, and Schuyler-Colfax middle schools. Students and parents can log in to their class websites from each school’s homepage. Content on the sites can be translated into one of eight different languages. The district’s homepage and each elementary school’s website have been similarly redesigned. Every school except Packanack Elementary rose in state rankings.
Packanack Elementary School was the only elementary school in Wayne that dropped in the rankings based the results of standardized tests for third and fourth graders. The rankings are based on the combined results from the state’s Assessment of Skills and Knowledge tests for language arts and math from 2011-2012 school year. — Have a question or news tip? District integrating more technology into lessons to prepare students for the future.
More than 300 iPads were placed in the hands of Wayne students recently as part of a pilot program to enhance the learning process by using technology. The program called STEM, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, is a new “integral part of the overall curriculum,” officials said in a statement released recently. It is designed to prepare students for a world where the use of tablet computers, robotics and the ever-increasing number of social media applications becomes more integrated into everyday life. Elementary and middle school students are using iPads in a variety of ways. Some are creating fractions using voice commands. Music classes are using the devices as instruments. The township will receive more than $4.3 million in state aid for fiscal year 2014, the state Department of Community Affairs announced Monday. The amount is the same the town received for Fiscal Year 2013. Aid for all 16 Passaic County municipalities remains flat year over year. Three Passaic County towns received more aid than Wayne: Clifton received $10 million, Passaic about $12.5 million, and Paterson received $32 million. Property taxes may only increase 2 percent year over year due to legislation Governor Christie approved the legislation in 2010. Several districts in Passaic County see a bump in aid, but Wayne's award holds at just less than $3.8M.
The Wayne Public School District will receive exactly the same amount of state aid as it did last year, slightly less than $3.8 million. The state Department of Education released aid figures Thursday afternoon, two days after Gov Chris Christie delivered his budget address to the state Legislature. Wayne will receive $3,784,000 in aid. Officials are in the middle of refining the district's 2013-14 budget. The $132.2 million tax levy, which is still being finalized, could raise the average homeowner's school taxes by $205 if the budget is approved and all district programs and services remain as is. Move being made to offset fuel costs for 82-bus fleet.
The Wayne Public School District is projected to take in approximately $125,000 this year due to a new initiative that allows for advertisements to be placed on school buses. The district has entered into an agreeement with the Educational Information and Resource Center (ERIC). ERIC will work on having advertising placed on each of the district's 82 school buses, Superintendent Ray Gonzalez said. "Depending on the number of buses, the number of advertisements, ad size and other specifics, the revenue could range from $450 to $2,000 per bus, per year," Gonzalez said.
