No One Hurt in 'Accidental' House Fire, Authorities Say

Blaze started on the exterior of the house and moved to the attic.

No one was hurt in what authorities are calling an accidental fire on Indian Road Friday morning. Pat Lowe, the homeowner, said her daughter and her boyfriend were home when the fire started. They and a few pets got out of the house with no injuries. Lowe said a man saw the fire, knocked on the door, and yelled for the occupants to get out of the house. Fire Commissioner Steve Toth said the fire appeared to have started on the exterior of the house and migrated into the attic. “Everything right now points to this being an accidental fire,” Toth said. “There’s nothing suspicious at this point.” Toth said authorities were still investigating the cause of the blaze Friday afternoon. All five fire companies and the Wayne Fire Aid Squad …

Firefighters Honored for Heroic Sandy Efforts

More than 40 emergency service personnel receive awards for assisting in the rescue of Officer Bob Franco and Assistant Fire Chief John Neukem during Superstorm Sandy.

Forty-three firefighters and a civilian dispatcher were honored at the council meeting on Wednesday for their participation in the rescue of police Officer Bob Franco and John Neukem during Superstorm Sandy. Neukem and Franco were on Lake Drive West Oct. 29 when a tree fell on the vehicles they were occupying. Franco suffered a severe spinal cord injury and went through weeks of rehabilitation. Neukem, assistant chief of Co. 5, suffered minor injuries. "The word brotherhood means more to me now than it ever did," said Barry Turner, fire commissioner. "There was no way that we were going to leave the scene that night without getting both of them out." Neukem's vehicle was positioned so that he was able to see that the tree was about to fall…

Lightning Strike Possible Cause of Myrtle Ave. Fire

No injuries reported as shed on property catches fire Monday night.

Authorities are investigating a possible lightning strike that occurred at a Mrytle Avenue property Monday night. Fire Commissioner Barry Turner said firefighters found a shed on fire on the back of the property at 43 Myrtle Ave. shortly before 8 p.m. Turner said the back of the property was on fire and that the back of the house was exposed to fire as well. Turner said lighting could have struck the ground and traveled toward the shed and the house. Lighting streaked across the sky during the rainstorm last night at about the time the incident occurred. “We have definite signs of melted wires and electrical sockets inside the garage,” Turner said. Inspectors from the fire department were at the scene investigating the incident at about 9 …
