Group is designed to help siblings of special needs students.
A new support group for siblings of special needs students will meet for the first time this week. The group is designed for children in third thorugh eighth grade. It is set up so children can freely express what they are a feelings and experiencing in a group setting. The group will hold its first meeting Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Giggles and Grow Preschool. Jamie LaRusso, a licensed professional counselor and mother of three children, including one with special needs, will facilitate the meetings. The group is a collaborative effort between the Wayne Public School District and the Wayne Council of Parent Teacher Organization's Special Parents Association. Specialist will instruct parents how they can identify the essential components of an Individualized Education Program.
Parents can learn about Individualized Education Programs (IEP) and ways they can imporve the educational outcomes of their children at a special workshop Jan. 29. "Parent Involvement in Education: An Overview of the IEP Procress" will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Wayne Public Library. The Special Parents Association (SPA) of the Wayne Council of Parent Teacher Organizations is sponsoring the workshop. The SPA works to educate parents of special education students about their child's education and what they can do to imporve his or her educational experiennce. Wayne Education Association gives Parent Teacher Organization money to help families who need to buy groceries and to help stock its food pantry.
The Wayne Education Association has donated more than $5,200 to the Wayne Council of Parent Teacher Organizations to help feed needy families. The association presented dozens of Shop Rite gift cards to Karen Marron, co-president of the council, Wednesday. The council will give the gift cards to needy families. Gift cards are distributed to families through the schools. Participation is voluntary and anonymous. Cards will also be used on an as-needed basis to purchase food for the PTO’s food pantry. Gift cards, food will be donated to local families.
The Wayne Council of Parent Teacher Organizations (PTO) is running a food drive to help local families. The PTO is asking residents to donate gift cards from local grocery stores to help residents purchase food and other necessities. Residents can bring gift cards valued between $5 and $25 to kindergarten orientation events at the following elementary schools: Cash will not be accepted, only gift cards. “We just want to help families who need help,” said Janine Del Vecchio, co-president of the council. Gift cards and food from the PTO’s food bank will be donated to families who request the help through their child’s school nurse.
