YMCA Will Use New Gardens as Learning Tools

Organization hopes to use the recently constructed gardens to teach kids about healthy living and sustainability.

The Wayne YMCA will use gardens to help children gain a better understanding about food, sustainability, and healthy eating. Victor Alfieri, a sustainability advocate from Wayne, constructed the gardens this week. He has successfully lobbied for residents to keep chickens in their backyards and gives talks at the library about health and sustainability. “The biggest goal for us is to use them as a learning tool,” said Liz Youngstein, director of healthy living for the Metro YMCA of the Oranges, the organization that runs the facility. “I think kids need to know where they’re food comes from. They need to get involved and how to eat healthy. We’re hoping they get the kids to try more vegetables.” Youngstein said she plans on having the kids…

Community Garden Plots Still Available to Rent

Residents need to pay $60 to use a plot to grow flowers, vegetables, and herbs.

Plots are still available to rent in the Wayne Community Garden. Each 35 square-foot plot costs $60 to rent for the year. Plots are raised beds of soil in a fenced-in area at the Van Riper Hopper House museum. Residents can plant vegetables, flowers, or herbs in their plot. Residents may not use pesticides.  A committee of residents has overseen the project and constructed the garden.  Victor Alfieri, a sustainability advocate who is running for a seat on the council in this year’s election, spearheaded the project. — Have a question or news tip? Incumbent Wayne Republicans Face Slate of Democratic Challengers

Three at-large council seats and mayoralty at stake this fall.

The Wayne mayor and council election is set, absent any Independent challengers who may file to run.  The Township will avert party primaries in June as the Passaic County Regular Republicans and Democratic Organization each submitted four candidates for office by Monday's 4 p.m. filing deadline. Incumbent Republican Mayor Chris Vergano will face a challenge in the fall from Democrat Francine Del Vecchio, a teacher at Caldwell College, according to township Clerk Paul Margiotta. The Township Council's three at-large seats are set to expire this year, and incumbent Republicans Joseph Schweighardt, Lonni Miller Ryan and James Jimenez filed to retain them. They will face challenges from Democrats Bethania Marranzini-Marmolejo, Victor Alfieri …

Bill, the geese can still be shot. I would have to assume the town will get the proper permits. None of the birds involved are endangered, just nuisances.   more ›

Memorable Wayne Quotes of 2012

Here are some of the best responses from the past year.

Chickens, Jersey Central Power & Light, Wayne Hills football, Bob Franco, and floodgates. Those are the five topics that stories these quotes were found in were about. “I have a wife and kids to get back to and take care of and I have a career to finish. I am bound and determined to get back to the way things were. I need to be able to fully use my arms and legs again so I can give each one of those people who helped me that day a great big bear hug." — Wayne Police Officer Bob Franco on his desire to recover from a serious spinal cord injury he suffered during Superstorm Sandy. "It is going to be hard to walk away, but I realized this week that next week would be the latest we'd be around. I am going to miss the kids, it was a great group…

Thanks Dan, But it was more like 3 years. My wife and I were harassed over a law that did not exist. Town council compared what we were doing to running an illegal used car lot and I was told I had no respect for the law. All before I ever stepped in front of a judge. Finally someone took the time to pick up the law and read it. Thanks Judge Katz. It only took 3 years for the truth and thousands …   more ›
