Nicole Fabris replaces Laura Russomano.
The Board of Education hired a new principal of Theunis Dey Elementary School. Nicole Fabris was hired at the board’s meeting Thursday. Fabris will earn a pro rated salary of $119,827; her salary will be updated pending the completion of negotiations. She has a master's degree from Montclair State University. Fabris replaces Laura Russomano effective July 25. Wayne Valley Principal Robert Reis will retire after 17 years at the school on Aug. 1. Laura Russomano, principal of Theunis Dey Elementary School will retire effective Aug. 1. New principal of Randall Carter expected to be hired.
Another Wayne principal has decided to retire this year. Laura Russomano, principal of Theunis Dey Elementary School, will retire Aug. 1. The Board of Education is scheduled to approve the move at its meeting Thursday night. Russomano is the third Wayne principal who will retire this year. Pamela Longo, principal of Pines Lake Elementary School, and Kenneth Kaplan, principal of Randall Carter Elementary School, will both retire in August. They each have been at their respective positions for nine years. The board is also scheduled to vote on hiring a principal to replace Kaplan. Jennifer Morris would take over for Kaplan Aug. 12. The agenda for the meeting Thursday says Morris has a master's degree from The College of Saint Elizabeth. …

Pines Lake, Theunis Dey, and George Washington will be in session to make up for an extra day they were closed following Superstorm Sandy.
Pines Lake and Theunis Dey elementary schools and George Washington Middle School will be in session on Tuesday, Feb. 19. The schools were scheduled to be closed for winter recess but will be open to make up an extra day they were closed for after Superstorm Sandy. District officials sought imput from parents on what day the schools should be open. Good Friday, March 29, was one of the days parents had the option of recommending. Some parents took offense to the idea of ever having school on one of the high Christian holy days. Superintendent Ray Gonzalez said all schools in the district will be closed on Good Friday. Bergen County Sheriff's Office will transport supplies to Little Ferry schools. Schools and homes in that town were destroyed and severely damaged by Tropical Storm Sandy.
Students and parents from Theunis Dey Elementary School collected and donated a dozen boxes of books and school supplies for the Little Ferry School District recently. Little Ferry schools were severly damanged by Tropical Storm Sandy earlier this month. Some school buildings are still not being used. Students are taking classes in other buildings throughout the municipality. The collection drive was a collaborative effort between the school's Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) and school personnel. "We're so happy we had the chance to donate some supplies but also to engage the students in assisting with the relief efforts. It is the season of giving and we're more than happy to help out other towns that were impacted by Sandy," said …

Special committee created a community garden and held an educational party for the planet to educate their peers and the community about environmental initiatives.
Students from Theunis Dey Elementary School recently received the Promising Practices Award from the Character Education Partnership (CEP) for their Celebrating Our Planet program. Students on the school’s Go Green Team formed a committee to increase awareness of the environment to their peers. The committee, with the help of teachers, created a community garden and an outdoor classroom to be used by all classes at the school. The students also held a Party for the Planet. They provided information to parents and their peers on a variety of environmental subjects. The CEP is non-profit coalition of organizations and individuals whose goal is to benefit society through reform in schools by addressing a wide variety of issues that affect …

All schools will open on a delayed basis Tuesday and on a regular schedule for the rest of the week.
George Washington Middle School and Theunis Dey Elementary School will open on a delayed schedule Tuesday, district officials confirmed. The other 12 schools opened on a delayed basis Monday due to the effects and damage caused by Hurricane Sandy. All township schools were closed last week. All 14 schools will operate on a regular schedule on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, said Board of Education President Donald Pavlak Jr. Students were scheduled to be off Tuesday for Election Day and Thursday and Friday due to the New Jersey Education Association’s teachers’ convention in Atlantic City. Inclement weather forces rescheduling.
The Brain Quest Challenge and charity test drive event scheduled for Tuesday night at Theunis Dey Elementary School was cancelled. The Brain Quest Challenge is a quiz-show based game for kids. It is co-sponsored by Chrysler and the Brain Quest Nationwide Test Drive Tour. Adults were to have the chance to test drive a 2012 Chrysler Town & Country minivan. For every test drive, Chrysler would have donated $10 to the school through its Drive for the Kids fundraising initiative.
