Bill to Protect Firefighters From Solar Panel Dangers Advances

Assemblyman Robert Schroeder sponsors bill requiring emblem on buildings where solar panels are attached to the roof to protect firefighters from electrocution.

With an increasing number of buildings investing in alternative energy, emergency responders are often unable to immediately identify structures that have installed solar panels on their roofs — putting them at risk of electrocution in the event of a fire.  In an effort to protect firefighters against the danger of electrocution posed by solar panels, Assemblyman Robert Schroeder (R-Woodcliff Lake), a volunteer firefighter in the Township of Washington since 1980 who has twice served as fire chief, has sponsored a bill that would require buildings to clearly label with an exterior emblem whether they have solar panels. The bipartisan bill was approved by the Assembly Homeland Security and State Preparedness Committee, on which Schroeder …

Wayne Business Owner Joins Clean Energy Council

New bi-partisan organization will work to advance renewable energy initiatives in New Jersey.

A Wayne resident is joining the fight for a cleaner, less polluted future for the Garden State. Robert Simpson, the owner of Brother Sun Solar, is one of 111 business owners to join the newly-formed New Jersey Business Council for Clean Energy (BCCE), a non-partisan network of businesses and business leaders committed to advancing renewable energy initiatives in New Jersey. The group is comprised of solar energy providers, engineering firms, and solar panel developers. “Making renewable energy more affordable and accessible to people just makes sense,” Simpson said. “Here is a fostering industry that helps make the planet healthy. We have to embrace it as much as we can.” The organization wants to work with local, county, and state …

Don't ask the question if you can't handle the truthful, complete answer. Unsophisticated & simple? C'mon Scondo -- we all know better than that. And we also know that you understand the self-enrichment endeavors of someone who sells solar panels for a living to be on the Board of Wayne Energy, and on the Wayne Environmental Commission and on some organization looking to snuggle up to the BPU. Solars Panels Running At 7 Wayne Schools [Video]

Real-time displays show how much energy the schools are saving

Solar panels at seven public schools in Wayne are up and running. A flat-screen television has been installed at the each school. Each one displays real-time information, including real-time solar energy consumption and how much the panels are reducing the school’s carbon footprint. A panel at Theunis Dey Elemetnary School on Wednesday displayed that, up until that point, the panels had generated enough energy to power one home, or run one car, for a year. “It’s a holistic view of how much energy were saving,” said John Maso, facilities director of the district. The televisions also display how much carbon dioxide the panels have prevented from being generated, how much energy have generated, and are generating. Graphs indicating the …

Planning Board Approves Temple's Solar Panel Project

Panels could cut Temple's dependance on power grid.

The Planning Board has approved Temple Beth Tikvah’s application to install a 10,000-square foot system of solar panels in its parking lot. The board unanimously approved the application Monday night. It is the first time a house of worship in town will install solar panels on its property. Steve Taylor, from Green Energy Construction & Consulting, said the panels are expected to generate 144 kilowatts of energy an hour, enough to potentially eliminate the Temple’s reliance on power from PSE&G. “The project gives the temple the ability to significantly reduce its electric bill,” said Michael Ruben, the attorney who represented the Temple before the board. The 600 panels will be installed atop a skeletal structure in the parking lot, …

Planning Board Hears Arguments For and Against Temple's Solar Project

Teak Road resident: 'This is going to be an eyesore.'

Several residents who live near Temple Beth Tikvah do not want the Planning Board to approve the installation of several solar panel arrays in the facility's parking lot.  Temple members and residents spoke for and against the project at a Planning Board Monday night. The Temple is applying to install a 10,000 square-foot, elevated solar panel system in its parking lot. Plants and shrubs would also be installed in and around the area to improve the area’s aesthetics. The Temple would enter into a power purchase agreement for the energy generated from the panels. The Temple would own the panels after 20 years. According to Rodney Black, a Temple member who was involved in acquiring funding for the project and setting it up, said the Temple …

The temple should be allowed the same considerations that the Wayne Public Schools was afforded. Where were these residnts when they constructed the solar panels at the Hills High-School and at Schuylar Colfax Junior High-School and the 5 other schools. The hugh and unused parking lot in the reservoir should be able to hold another 3-400 panels as well as at least 3 windmills in the reservoir …   more ›

School Board, Town May Enter into Agreement for Solar Panels

Project estimated to cost $3 million.

The township and school district may enter into a project to install solar panels on several buildings. The township introduced an ordinance June 1 appropriating $40,000 to fund a request for proposals for the project. The work includes, but is not limited to, engineering, design, construction management, and an analysis of properties the panels could be installed on. The township will put in the request that is the winning respondent’s responsibility to fund the project. According to the ordinance, the project is estimated to cost $3 million, including the $40,000 already appropriated. The project can move forward jointly or with only the township’s participation, the ordinance states. “The board is under no obligation to join them or …

Solar Energy Units Installed on Chestnut Drive

The power they generate will replace some generated by fossil fuels.

Solar energy units have been installed on utility poles on Chestnut Drive. The units are part of PSE&G’s Solar 4 All program. The energy company is planning on installing the units in more than 300 municipalities within its service territory. Contractors are examining other potential locations in Wayne to install the units. They will only be placed on utility poles that have a clear exposure to the southern sky, have access to the proper voltage wires, and where they will not interfere with existing equipment. The solar panels themselves are 2 and one-half feet high and 5 feet wide. “The panels connect directly into the power gird,” said Fran Sullivan, a spokesman with PSE&G. “The energy gathered from them replaces some of the energy …

These panels are an eyesore. Why not build solar farms on the roofs of municiple buildings where they would not be seen. I've seen what they done with these type panels in Somerset/New brunswick and they are all installed in a haphazard manner and look like they are about to fall off. Notice all the great statistics mentioned, but nothing about how much these will save per household. I bet it is …   more ›
