Burglary Penalties Should Increase, Senator Says

New law sponsored by Senator Kevin O'Toole would upgrade the crime of breaking into a home.

Burglars may want to think twice about breaking into a home if new legislation is approved. State Senator Kevin O’Toole (District 40) introduced legislation this week that would increase the penalties against burglars who enter homes when families are home. The legislation would upgrade the burglary of a residence to a second-degree crime and of an occupied residence to a second-degree crime without the possibility of early release. More than a dozen Wayne homes were burglarized this summer. Residents were home when some of the homes were broken into. The punishment for a second-degree crime by five to 10 years imprisonment, a $150,000 fine, or both. Currently, all burglary offenses are third-degree crimes, unless a burglar is armed with …

JCP&L Sandy Response Continues to Get Slammed

Officials will meet with residents on Monday to discuss their experiences with the utility company in the days following Superstorm Sandy.

Local officials blasted Jersey Central Power & Light at a town hall meeting earlier this week for their response, or lack of response, to re-establishing power after Superstorm Sandy earlier this year. While there are only about 3,000 JCP&L customers in Wayne, most of those people were without power for more than a week during in the days following what some called was the worst storm in the history of the state. Most of Wayne is serviced by Public Service Electric & Gas. Some JCP&L customers were without power, and heat, for 12 or 13 days. Officials want a strong response from the Board of Public Utilities and fines and penalties levied against the company. “In this day and age it is incomprehensible how JCP&L treated its customers after …

JCP&L Rate Hike Should Be Denied, Senator Urges BPU

State Sen. Kevin O'Toole calls utility's request 'insulting' at Trenton hearing Wednesday.

State Sen. Kevin O’Toole (R-40th District) told Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) officials Wednesday morning their request for a $31.5-million rate hike following Hurricane Sandy was “insulting.” O’Toole, speaking at a state Board of Public Utilities (BPU) hearing in Trenton to discuss the rate hike, told Patch during a short recess he was given the opportunity to directly address JCP&L President Donald Lynch about the utilities response to the storm and “what went right and what went wrong.” “I told him it (the proposed rate increase) was insulting,” said O'Toole. “We critiqued as to why it was necessary and I said that perhaps it would be wise to keep money for the repairs from New Jersey in New Jersey” and not place the money in the…

Utility Companies Accountable Under Proposed Bill

State Sen. Kevin O'Toole wants PSE&G, JCP&L and others to improve response times during emergency situations.

A North Jersey state senator is proposing legislation to cut down on the long lines at gas stations and ensure the safety of residents during emergencies. State Sen. Kevin O’Toole (R-Cedar Grove) is co-sponsoring the New Jersey Residents Power Protection Act. The legislation would hold utility companies accountable for their response times during emergencies. It would also require gas stations and other facilities to have generators on hand to ensure residents have access to power and gasoline during emergencies situations. “It was apocalyptic in North Jersey in the days following Hurricane Sandy,” O’Toole said. “Sometimes, there was no evidence of any activity by the power companies at all.” O’Toole spoke regularly with several North …

Out of power for a week? For 2 weeks? Was your house divided in half by a tree, or filled with seawater? Were you or your family hurt, or god forbid, lost their life? Those things happened to some. I for one, will take time without electricity over the alternative any day. Does anyone agree? Sounds like many of you feel the extended loss of power was the worse that could happen.   more ›

Legislation Would Protect Applicants' Personal Information

State Senate bill would prohibit prospective employers from requiring an applicant to provide online passwords to social networking accounts.

A state Senate bill designed to protect job seekers’ personal information online moved one step closer to becoming law. The Senate Labor Committee moved legislation Thursday that would prohibit a prospective employer from requiring an applicant to provide online password or grant an employer to private social networking or other accounts. Employers would also be prohibited from requiring an individual to waive or limit any protection granted under the bill as a condition of applying for or receiving an offer of employment. Violators would face $1,000 for the first violation and $2,500 for each subsequent violation. Applicants could sue violators for damages. State Senator Kevin O’Toole is co-sponsoring the legislation. He represents Wayne …
