Volatile Compound Found in Well Water Near Pompton Lake

Local residents were notified of the existence of a compound found in printing inks via a letter late last month.

Some residents living in the Pines Lake section of town were notified that drinking water in a well near some of their properties contains elevated levels of Trichloroethene, or TCE. The Passaic County Department of Health (DOH) notified residents last month that high levels of TCE were found in a private well. The letter was mailed to homeowners within 1,000 feet of the property. TCE is a volatile organic compound found in printing inks, adhesives, and rug cleaners. The DOH is recommending that well owners in the affected area have their wells tested for VOCs. Keith Furlong, public information officer with the county, said the high level of TCE were discovered due to a homeowner testing his well because he is selling his property. If in …

Board Being Sued for Denying Pines Lake Application

Homeowners wanted to divide a 30,000 square-foot property into two smaller lots and build a house on one of the lots.

The Planning Board is being sued for denying an application to subdivide a Pines Lake lot into two smaller properties. A complaint has been filed in superior court against the board and township regarding the board denying Frederick and Barbara Habeeb’s application to split a 30,000 square-foot lakefront property into two separate lots. The complaint states: “The actions of the defendants, the township, and its planning board were arbitrary, capricious, and unreasonable.” The board was scheduled to discuss the ongoing litigation at a meeting on Monday in closed session. The Planning Board voted to deny the application in September. The homeowners want the denial “set aside and declared null and void.” The Habeebs wanted to divide their …

Pines Lake has been forever altered by recent over-building, removing trees and poor drainage. The 1960's law on the books was meant to protect the Community and the natural surroundings long before the property was purchased by this couple. They should have done their homework, not sue. Enough is enough!   more ›

Runners Raise $2,000 for Injured Police Officer

Pines Lake residents come together for Thanksgiving turkey trot to raise money for Officer Bob Franco and his family. Franco suffered a severe spinal cord injury during Tropical Storm Sandy.

A group of Pines Lake residents held an informal Turkey trot on Thanksgiving and collected more than $2,000 for injured police Officer Bob Franco and his family. Franco suffered a severe spinal cord injury during Tropical Storm Sandy when a tree fell on the vehicle he was occupying while at Fire Company 5. Although initially immobilized, Franco is slowly regaining his range of motion and ability to move. Some members of the group have been running together on Thanksgiving for 20 years. “A couple of us know Bob. I’ve met him several times and was pretty affected when I heard about what happened to him,” said Chris Adams, one of runners. “He is an extremely nice person and to know that he was severely injured really touched me.” About 40 …

Board Denies Pines Lake Application

Officials not convinced couple's reason for wanting to subdivide property was sufficient.

The Planning Board denied a couple’s application Monday to subdivide their Pines Lake property. Frederick and Barbara Habeeb applied to subdivide their 30,000 square-foot lakefront property into two smaller lots. The couple recently built a house on part of the land. The rest of the lot remains vacant. Members of the board said they were not satisfied that a good enough argument was made to justify deviating from the average lot size in the neighborhood. Scott Okun said that the couple needed to show “that the benefits of the deviation substantially outweigh any determents and I personally haven’t heard that myself.” The vote was unanimous. Gerome Vogel, the lawyer representing the Habeebs, said the couple would sell the newly created lot…

Fate of Controversial Lakefront Plan Could Be Decided

Residents concerned that decision could set a bad precedent for neighborhood.

An application to subdivide a Pines Lake property into two lots could be decided at a Planning Board meeting Monday. Frederick and Barbara Habeeb want to sub-divide their 30,000 square-foot lakefront property on Pines Lake Drive East into two lots: one measuring about 15,800 square feet, the other about 14,500 square feet. Testimony in the matter was heard at a board meeting earlier this month. Residents expressed concern at the meeting that having two smaller lots so close to the lake sets a bad precedent despite the fact that most the properties on the street are approximately the same size. The Pines Lake community is a private neighborhood around Pines Lake. The meeting will be held in the council chamber in the municipal complex …

Pines Lake Plan, Superfund Site Removal, New Spa Opens

Here are some of the stories we're working on this week at Wayne Patch.

Here is a sample of what we’re working on this week at Wayne Patch. Neighbors say that the application, if approved, would set a bad precedent. The application was slated to be heard last month, but the applicant, made a similar request, which the board approved. We’ll let you know what the board decides. The township is planning to construct a dog park and playground on the property, which is located at the Intersection of Black Oak Ridge Road and Pompton Plains Crossroad. We’ll attend the announcement and let you know what officials have to say about the news. An official grand opening ceremony was held at the business on Sunday. We’ll let you know what services the business offers and why they chose to open their business up in Wayne…
