850 Guns Turned in at Passaic Buyback Program

Authorities spend $112,000 to take 'lethal weapons out of circulation.'

An AK-47 assault rifle and a 12-gague, double-barred shotgun were two of the more than 850 firearms that were turned in at a two-day gun Passaic County buyback program held last week. Of the weapons that were turned in, 53 were illegal to own, either because they had unlawfully high magazine capacities or had been illegally modified. In addition to the AK-47 and the shotgun, two Tec 9 guns with 32-round magazines, an M1 rifle with a 20-round magazine and a sawed-off shotgun were handed in. Nearly 390 of the weapons were handguns. “It’s a credit to the citizens of Passaic County, as well as the other counties we’ve visited, that we’ve managed to take so many lethal weapons out of circulation,” Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa said in a …

Cell Phone Mail Scheme Ensnares Passaic County Man

Edinson Polo, 26, would place orders for inexpensive cell phones and then mail himself better ones that he would sell online, prosecutor says.

A Passaic County resident was arrested Monday for allegedly running a scheme where he would sell high-end cell phones on the Internet, the Passaic County Prosecutor Camilia Valdes announced Monday. Edinson Polo Jr., 26, of Clifton, would place e-mail orders with Vexwire, a Passaic company he worked for, for low-end, inexpensive cell phones, Valdes said in a news release. Polo used his position at the company to mail expensive cell phones to himself. He then sold the phones on eBay and Craig’sList online, Valdes said. Vexwire lost more than $75,000, Valdes said. “[Mr. Polo’s] arrest today should serve as a warning to those who intend to misuse the U.S. Mail to facilitate a crime,” Greg Kliemisch, postal inspector of the United States Postal…
