Milky Way applying to Planning Board for exceptions to parking and lighting rules. Non-profit wants to relocate science academy to Totowa Road and build dormitories for 300 students.
The Milky Way Education Center has brought another application before the Planning Board. The school brought a controversial application to construct a new education campus on the BAE Systems property on Totowa Road earlier this year. This newest application involves exceptions for parking and lighting. The application is on the agenda for the board’s meeting on Monday. The Board unanimously approved the Pioneer Academy of Science’s application to relocate to 165,000-square-foot building at 164 Totowa Road and construct dormitories on the second floor. The Milky Way Education Center, a non-profit, runs the academy. The school is currently located in a 19,000-square-foot building in Clifton. The school wants to more than triple its …

The Pioneer Academy of Science will construct nearly 100 dorms and classrooms as well as a gymnasium.
The Planning Board approved the Milky Way Education’s Center application to create a new education campus on the former BAE System Property on Totowa Road. The Pioneer Academy of Science bills itself as a co-educational “independent, private institution.” Students mostly hail from wealthy families both in the United States and from eastern European countries. The school is based in Clifton. The board unanimously approved the application. “Our focus is to try and educate children and not just the ones who already go to [Pioneer], but everyone in the neighborhood,” said Yucel Ari, a project manager with Lilium Inc. who spoke on behalf of Milky Way at the meeting. Testimony is scheduled to be heard on a controversial application to move a private school to Wayne at the Planning Board’s next meeting on Monday. The Milky Way Education Center is applying to the township to move The Pioneer Academy of Science from Clifton to the BAE Systems property on Totowa Road. School officials want to move the institution out of if 18,000 square-foot facility and into a new 160,000-square foot facility and triple its enrollment from 200 to 600 students. The town council approved legislation in February prohibiting dormitories being built in town expect in specifically zoned areas.
