Sunshine Prosthetics and Orthotics provides adults and children with artificial limbs the chance to play sports and outdoor activities.
A new business in town works to help those who have lost their legs a chance to walk again. Sunshine Prosthetics and Orthotics held its grand opening and a open house on Thursday. The facility provides personalized care by designing custom devices for physically-challenged adults and children with prosthetics. Owner Brooke Artesi is an amputee. She lost part of her right leg and foot when she was 15. “Each of our patients has a unique need,” Artesi said in a press release. “Providing the best care possible for our patients is our main focus and my goal is to keep people active.” Artesi competes annually in the Extremity Games, an adaptive sports competition for amputees, and has won awards for both rock climbing and kayaking. Council approves a $78.1 million budget; tax increase is the lowest in more than a decade.
The average homeowner’s municipal taxes will increase $59 due to the council approving a $56.6 million tax levy for 2013. The tax levy, the portion of the budget funded by local taxes, supports the town's $78.1 million budget. The average home is valued at slightly less than $229,000. Also factored into the $59 increase is nearly $3.2 million budgeted for the public library. The tax increase is the lowest in more than a decade. “It’s progress,” said Mayor Chris Veragno. “What we really need to do now is stabilize our ratable base and increase our ratable base.” Vergano noted that one of the factors leading to the increase was the $27.6 million in assessed tax value the town lost this year. The Township will avert party primaries in June as the Passaic County Regular Republicans and Democratic Organization each submitted four candidates for office by Monday's 4 p.m. filing deadline. Officials want Jersey Central Power & Light to be accountable to residents. Mayor Chris Vergano wrote and filed a notice to intervene as a third party in the matter of JCP&L’s request to the Board of Public Utilities to raise its utility rates. The notice was sent to Administrative Law Judge Richard McGill Monday. JCP&L has requested the BPU grant a 4.5 percent rate increase. The measure is intended to recoup some of the recovery costs associated with Sandy and other recent storms. JCP&L provides power to about 15 percent of the town. The council voted 8-1 Wednesday to introduce the proposed $78 million spending plan, which includes a $59.8 million tax levy, the portion of the budget funded by property taxes. Local political leaders are prepping for a “spirited” mayoral campaign this year. Incumbent Chris Vergano is seeking re-election as mayor while the Democrats have nominated a college professor to run against him. “We’re looking forward to a spirited campaign,” said John Traier chairman of the Passaic County Regular Republican Organization. Francine Del Vecchio wants to 'eliminate wasteful spending,' lower taxes, and bring businesses back to Wayne.
Wayne Democrats have nominated a mayoral candidate to run against incumbent Chris Vergano in the General Election in November. Francine Del Vecchio will run on a platform of cutting spending, bringing businesses back into town and preventing future tax increase. “This isn’t just talk,” Del Vecchio said in a statement issued Monday night. “I have an actual plan, which eliminates wasteful spending by the municipal governing body and will bring economic growth into the township. Councilwoman at-large Lonni Miller Ryan will be on the Wayne regular Republican Organization’s (WRRO) ticket for the primary election in June. Miller Ryan received 43 votes from the WRRO’s committee at a meeting Tuesday night at the Grand Chalet, the third most votes cast. Councilwoman Lonni Miller Ryan is expected to be dropped from Mayor Chris Vergano’s slate of candidates for the general election in November, NorthJersey.com reported this week.
