Project is still a year away from being complete officials say. County engineer holding public meeting on the project next week.
The construction project on Hamburg Turnpike is proceeding on schedule, but it is still about a year away from being completed. Workers shifted one of the westbound lanes and made it three feet wider this week and PSE&G continues to replace utility poles in front of ShopRite. The project involves installing jug handles, eliminating left turns, and widening lanes to improve traffic flow and repair one of the most heavily traveled thoroughfares in the county. “If it hadn’t been for Tropical Storm Sandy last year we’d be in really good shape,” said Tim Mettlen, assistant county engineer and the project manager, noting that the weather plays a factor in how fast work is done. “There’s a lot of stuff you can’t do when it’s raining,” Mettlen …

Freeholder Terry Duffy says main thoroughfare is a 'terrible road.' Improvements to the roadway could take another decade to complete.
Twenty-two people have died in car accidents on Paterson-Hamburg Turnpike since 1994, according to a report on NorthJersey.com. Wayne residents complain about the roadway constantly: it is too busy, dangerous, and filled with potholes. Freeholder Terry Duffy told the website that the roadway is "terrible." The county is working to make the experience of traveling on the five and a half mile road a little better with the installation of u-turns and jughandles. Drivers will be prohibited from making left turns onto local roads in an effort to improve traffic flow. But finishing the project for the entire roadway could take another 10 years and cost $100 million, the website reported. — Have a question or news tip? Contact editor Daniel …

Multi-million dollar construction project designed to improve traffic flow on roadway.
Drivers continue to experience delays on Hamburg Turnpike as improvement work continues on the heavily traveled thoroughfare. One lane of the roadway was closed down near Valley Road Wednesday. Traffic moved slowly, but steadily, in the area. Work on the project began in June. County officials estimate it will be complete by the spring of 2014. “I hope the work doesn't take them any longer than they said it would,” said Nancy Collins as she walked on the street. “It’s great that they’re working on the road I just wish it didn’t cause delays all the time.” Town officials have said that the project is going well and is on schedule. The work is part of a massive $9.4 million project to improve traffic flow on the county-owned roadway. Jug …

Jug handles on Hamburg Turnpike designed to improve traffic flow.
The improvement project on Hamburg Turnpike is proceeding on schedule, county officials say, but local communters continue to be affected by delays on both Hamburg Turnpike and nearby roadways. "The project is proceeding on schedule and there have not been any unforeseen problems," said Steve Edmond, Passaic County Engineer. Construction equipment continues to line the heavily-traveled roadway, causing drivers to slow down and remain cautious. Parts of lanes have been closed as work is done. The county wants to improve traffic flow on Hamburg by eliminating left-hand turns and forcing people to use the jug handles. Often, commuters effectively shut down one lane of the road when trying to make a left on the roadway, causing backups and …

Jug handles, bridges will be constructed along heavily-traveled roadway.
Residents who frequently travel on Hamburg Turnpike should be prepared for some delays for several months to come. The road project at the Hamburg Turnpike and Valley Road intersection has begun, county personnel announced on Friday. The $9.4 million project is expected to take approximately 20 months to complete. The major work of the project involves installing jug handles on the heavily-traveled roadway. One ramp will be constructed between the Chase Bank building and the former Casey O’Toole’s site. The move will allow westbound traffic to turn left onto Valley Road. Another ramp will be installed between the Valley National Bank and Caldwell Banker parking lot and the Ramapo Shopping Center to allow eastbound traffic to turn left onto…
County announces what roads will be repaved for its 2012 road resurfacing project.
The following Wayne roads will be repaved as part of the Passaic County 2012 road resurfacing project. All the roads are county-owned thoroughfares. Work is scheduled to begin this summer and be completed by the end of October. The information comes out the same day the township issued a press release regarding an extensive $9 million safety improvement project that’s being done on Hamburg Turnpike. — Have a question or news tip? Store will be located where Friendly's restaurant used to be.
The Planning Board approved an application for a new Walgreen's store on Hamburg Turnpike Monday night. The board approved the application 6-1. Board member and Councilwoman Lonni Miller Ryan cast the lone vote against the application. The store will have large glass windows covering most of the front of the building to let in more light and a white roof, both eco-friendly features. The windows will let in more sunlight, decreasing the need to use fossil fuels to illuminate the interior of the store. The roof will also reflect more sunlight away from the building and into the atompshere, lowered the ambient temperature of and around the building. The Board of Adjustment voted down an application to construct a Walgreen's at the same …

More left-hand turns to be eliminated on county road to improve traffic flow and safety.
Left-hand turns are being eliminated on Hamburg Turnpike between Church Lane and Hinchman Avenue in an effort to improve traffic flow and safety on the heavily traveled roadway. Traffic on the county-owned road can back up and become delayed because of people making left turns onto side streets like Valley Road. “It’s needed to improve safety and to remove traffic congestion,” said Steve Edmond, Passaic County engineer. “If you take the left-hand turns out it will improve the flow of traffic along the roadway.” Vehicles often block a lane of traffic to make left-hand turns from Hamburg on side streets and into shopping malls. Two jug handles will be installed on Hamburg Turnpike. One will be located on the eastbound side of the road …

Change enacted to improve pedestrian safety and vehicular traffic near Schuyler-Colfax Middle School.
Valhalla Way will be a one-way street between the eastern most intersection at Valhalla and Surrey Drive heading to Hamburg Turnpike. The council approved the change with an ordinance Wednesday night. Drivers will be prohibited from turning left onto Valhalla Way from Hamburg Turnpike. Drivers make the turn constantly throughout the day as a way of avoiding a jughandle on Hamburg Turnpike. Officials and residents have been critical of the county to install the jughandle on Hamburg, a county-owned roadway. “It’s turned a quite, residential neighborhood into a raceway,” said Councilwoman Nadine Bello, who sponsored the legislation. Vehicles also cut through Valhalla and Surrey to get to Jackson Avenue, which connects to Black Oak Ridge Road…
