A benefit is being held for Sid Kirby, a resident who suffered a severe spinal cord injury when he crashed his motorcycle in Mahwah in 2012. Grasshopper Too will host a benefit for Kirby on Thursday, Jan. 31. Kirby, a resident and employee with the town’s Department of Public Works, lost control of his Harley Davidson motorcycle as he proceeded through a curve on the bend of a dangerous intersection. He hit a guardrail and was thrown 40 feet from his motorcycle onto a resident’s lawn. Mahwah police said Kirby was intoxicated when he was driving. A few business owners met Wednesday to start a dialogue and see what they can do to help each other the next time disaster strikes. Wayne Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters (VOAD) and a newly-formed long-term recovery group sponsored the event. A few business owners form the Mountain View section of town attended the gathering. The area is often one of the first in town to flood. Several businesses were closed for months after Tropical Storm Irene hit last August. Some haven't reopened yet. Dozens done green, order Guiness, and have a good time at traditional Irish bar and restaurant.
The party lasted for hours at Grasshopper Too this St Patrick's Day. The traditional Irish bar and restaurant hosted its first large event since it reopened last year. The 23-year-old restaurant was closed for two months due to flooding caused by Hurricane Irene. Residents wore green, ordered plently of Guiness, and appeared to have a great time at the 23-year-old establishment.

Major remolding work needed after establishment received 4 feet of water from Hurricane Irene.
A remodeled Grasshopper Too opened its doors to customers on Friday, after flooding from Hurricane Irene ruined the 23-year-old bar and restaurant in late August. “This was the first time we ever got flooded, and we figured we’d do a full remodel and make it more people friendly,” owner Tom Fitzpatrick said. “This remodel has been a God send.” By 8:30 p.m. Friday there were 150 people in the restaurant. The inside of the restaurant and pub was painted red and green, with an antiqued finish and has small sayings in Gaelic on the walls. Owner expects to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars in repairs and lost business.
The Oak walls are warped. The floor is torn up. The upholstered chairs and booths are gone. The Grasshopper Too will be closed for the next two months while major repairs and renovations are gone inside the 23-year-old restaurant on Erie Avenue. The area was severely flooded due to Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee drenched the area in August. The facility was also flooded in March, but the restaurant’s owner said before this year, flooding was never a problem. “We were an island.
