Special workshop discusses important role parents play to help reduce bullying in schools.
Changing children’s attitude toward bullying must begin at home. That is what George Scott, a licensed family and marriage therapist, stressed to parents and educators at a community forum at Wayne Hills High School Monday. Scott told the audience that parents, and educators, have a responsibility to create a culture where children feel secure, safe, and able to express themselves freely without fear of reprisals. “Kids want to succeed. They want to do well,” Scott said. “They want to hear things like ‘I am proud of you.’ A child’s greatest need is acceptance.” That acceptance, Scott said, must start at home. But several factors can make ensuring a child lives in a peaceful environment. Families are under more stress now because both …

Line on Route 23 stretches for more than a mile.
It was another stress-filled day at the pump in Wayne Thursday. Drivers waited in line for hours to fill their gas tanks or buy gas for their generators. “I’ve never seen it this bad,” said Melinda Cruz, a Pompton Plains resident who waited two and a half hours to get gas at the Cumberland Farms station on Hamburg Turnpike. The line Cruz waited in wrapped around the Preakness Shopping Center and up the Alps Road extension that connects with Berdan Avenue. Drivers pushed the limits of their patience for the second consecutive day as hundreds of vehicles lined up at gas stations throughout Wayne. “People aren’t going to be able to take much more of this,” said Nick Castalenos. “Someone is going to lose it one of these days and then we’re …

Governor speaks in Pompton Lakes about the need to get out of harm's way.
Gov. Chris Christie formally requested President Barack Obama declare a pre-landfall emergency for New Jersey, according to a press release issued by the governor's office. The declaration would allow the state to request funding and other assistance for actions taken in advance of Hurricane Sandy. "We have taken this action to assist communities which have taken extraordinary measures to insure the safety of the public during this very serious and dangerous storm," Christie said in the release. "Don't be stupid, get out." Hurricane Sandy is expected to bring flooding, high winds and heavy rain across the state over a period of 36 hours starting early Monday morning. During a press conference in Pompton Lakes on Sunday afternoon, Christie …

Law extends time it takes to be granted tenure, which will be tied to new evaluation system.
Gov. Chris Christie signed legislation into law Monday that transforms the existing teacher tenure system, tying it to a teacher’s performance in the classroom and not just on how long an educator has been in the profession. The Teacher Effectiveness and Accountability for the Children of New Jersey (TEACHNJ) Act goes into effective starting with the 2013-2014 school year, and was created with input from the New Jersey Education Association. The legislation enacts three new measures: “We are taking a huge leap forward in providing a quality education and real opportunity to every student in New Jersey,” Christie said in a statement. "Now is the time to build on this record of cooperation and results to put in place further reforms focused …

Christie vetoed the bill, as promised, the same day it arrived on his desk.
Governor Christie conditionally vetoed the gay marriage bill Friday afternoon, delivering on his promise of "swift action" against the measure, which passed in both houses of the Legislature this week. Christie's veto came a day after the state Assembly passed the bill legalizing same-sex marriages by a 42-33 vote. The governor, an opponent of gay marriage, had promised "very swift action" if the bill passed in both houses. The Senate approved the bill Monday in a 24-16 vote. In a prepared statement Friday, the governor said the best approach would be to strengthen the state's current civil union law and suggested appointing an ombudsman to handle discrimination complaints from gay couples. "I have been just as adamant that same-sex …
