Teens looking to get tan this summer should read a new bill that passed in New Jersey on Monday that restricts certain types of tanning for minors. The new law bans anyone under 18 from using a tanning bed and anyone under 14 from getting a spray tan. Gov. Chris Christie signed the bill into law Monday and issued a lengthy signing statement expressing a desire to protect children from skin cancer while keeping the rights of businesses — especially small businesses — intact. It’s been a consistent refrain from Gov. Chris Christie’s office following Hurricane Sandy’s landing on New Jersey’s shores. Make no mistake about it, he told the assembled crowd of lawmakers at the Statehouse Tuesday afternoon, New Jersey will be back. As expected, much of Christie’s State of the State address focused on Sandy’s impact on New Jersey and the ongoing effort to see those areas most devastated by the storm restored as quickly as possible. Gov. Chris Christie signed legislation into law on Friday requiring parents to notify officials when their child will be absent from school. The law also stipulates that school officials must contact a parent if a student is absent without prior notification to the school. “Community leaders and parents will now be required to take immediate, personal responsibility for the children they must care for and protect,” state Senator Kevin O’Toole, who initiated the new law, said in a press release. “Just a few seconds of accountability can be enough to save lives and solve abductions.” The bill, known as Tabitha’s Law, is named for a Tennessee teenager, Tabitha Tudor, who has been missing since 2003. According to registered New Jersey voters who took place in a recent poll, yes, he did. Fairleigh Dickinson University’s PublicMind reports that 58 percent of registered voters with knowledge of the speech believe he was more successful at selling himself to the American public than advocating the Romney/Ryan ticket. In a speech that was both biographical and also touched upon the Republicans' vision for the country, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was in the limelight Tuesday as he delivered the keynote address at the Republican National Convention in Tampa.
