Teens looking to get tan this summer should read a new bill that passed in New Jersey on Monday that restricts certain types of tanning for minors. The new law bans anyone under 18 from using a tanning bed and anyone under 14 from getting a spray tan. Gov. Chris Christie signed the bill into law Monday and issued a lengthy signing statement expressing a desire to protect children from skin cancer while keeping the rights of businesses — especially small businesses — intact. "Even if motivated by good intentions, rules and restrictions on the use of property, the exercise of rights, and the opportunities to prosper can have a corrosive effect on our state’s growth, and the lives of our citizens," Christie said. "When the regulations in …

Gov. Chris Christie has been considered by some legislators and constituents to be somewhat of a hero for his response and leadership following Superstorm Sandy. But now that the storm has passed, the governor is looking toward the future and a potential run for presidency, according to a Time magazine article, "The Boss," about the state's leader. As Republicans look to place a strong candidate in the 2016 presidential election, Christie may be their choice. But state Democratic leaders said there is much the governor has still not delivered on during his tenure. Despite rumors that he was planning to run for president in 2012, Christie publicly announced several times over that he did not have intentions to run. Now months later, after …

Governor delivered his third State of the State address Tuesday in Trenton.
It’s been a consistent refrain from Gov. Chris Christie’s office following Hurricane Sandy’s landing on New Jersey’s shores. Make no mistake about it, he told the assembled crowd of lawmakers at the Statehouse Tuesday afternoon, New Jersey will be back. As expected, much of Christie’s State of the State address focused on Sandy’s impact on New Jersey and the ongoing effort to see those areas most devastated by the storm restored as quickly as possible. During the approximately 45-minute speech, one that was marked by several standing ovations—many of them for Christie, some for residents who performed heroically during and after Sandy—the governor appealed for bipartisanship in politics at both the state and national level as New Jersey …

Gov. Chris Christie signed legislation into law on Friday requiring parents to notify officials when their child will be absent from school. The law also stipulates that school officials must contact a parent if a student is absent without prior notification to the school. “Community leaders and parents will now be required to take immediate, personal responsibility for the children they must care for and protect,” state Senator Kevin O’Toole, who initiated the new law, said in a press release. “Just a few seconds of accountability can be enough to save lives and solve abductions.” The bill, known as Tabitha’s Law, is named for a Tennessee teenager, Tabitha Tudor, who has been missing since 2003. Tudor's parents were not aware she did not …

Gov. Chris Christie will seek a second term as New Jersey's governor. He made the announcement during an appearance at a press conference at the Port Monmouth Fire Dept. Monday afternoon. Christie declined to talk in detail about his bid, saying he is saving that for a more formal announcement in January. But he did say he sought the advice of his wife, Mary Pat, and four children, over the Thanksgiving Day weekend, and got their blessing. "I have a job to finish that I would have never anticipated to have six weeks ago," said Christie. He said loved the Garden State. "I want to leave it better than I found it when I'm done." Did Gov. Chris Christie gave a bigger boost to himself than to presidential hopeful Mitt Romney with his speech at the Republican National Convention? According to registered New Jersey voters who took place in a recent poll, yes, he did. Fairleigh Dickinson University’s PublicMind reports that 58 percent of registered voters with knowledge of the speech believe he was more successful at selling himself to the American public than advocating the Romney/Ryan ticket. According to the poll's results, only 23 percent said the speech was more effective at helping to convince the electorate to support Romney. “Governor Christie’s speech was seen or heard by a national audience, many of whom were being introduced to the governor for the first …

Other top stories this week included the cancellation of MTV's 'Jersey Shore,' and the botched sinking of what was expected to be the world's largest underwater sculpture.
A 23-year-old man, described by neighbors as a recently discharged military veteran, shot and killed two co-workers before taking his own life at the Pathmark supermarket in Old Bridge early Friday morning, according to Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan. A 16-year-old boy from Sayreville riding on a bus full of teenagers heading to a Sweet 16 was killed Friday after he stuck his head out of a roof hatch on the bus and hit an overpass as the vehicle drove on Interstate 95 southbound, near the George Washington Bridge, an official said. The show that made Seaside Heights famous—or, at least, infamous—is going off the air. MTV announced Thursday afternoon its hit series "Jersey Shore" will end after a recently taped season airs this …
