George Washington, Theunis Dey Closed, Superintendent Says

Before and after school care will be provided.

George Washington Middle School and Theunis Dey Elementary School will be closed on Monday, Superintendet Ray Gonzalez said.  All other schools will open on a delayed schedule.  "We hope to have George Washington and Theunis Dey open for Tuesday, but he final decision will be made [Tuesday]," Gonzalez. said. Gonzalez issued a notice to residents Sunday afternoon about officials’ plan of action for the week. The notice was sent out at 4:30 p.m. and updated a half hour later. "We will only open up a school if we are confident that students and staff are safe and sound,” Gonzalez said in the notice. I have received calls 3 days in a row from PSEG letting me know my power has been restored. Funny since my street is littered with downed trees, snapped poles and wires. Again, wondering if they are making these calls to falsely boost their numbers. 8th Day since the storm and not one person has done work on our street. I am no fool, I realize there are people in worse shape.   more ›

Activities Offer a Slice of Colonial Life at Dey Mansion

Dancing, education, arts and crafts, and weaponry highlighted at Washington's former headquarters.

Adults and children alike received an education in what it was like to live in colonial times at a celebration of George Washington's birthday at the Dey Mansion on Sunday afternoon. Kids watched a glassmaker create small windows of stained glass while others watched a man carve tools and toys out of wood. Attendees watched as actors danced with each other in traditional, colonial style, rotating partners every few minutes, working down a line. Re-enactors fired real muskets and marched together, much to the delight of the children in the audience.  Then-General Washington used the mansion, in July, October and November of 1780, during the Revolutionary War.
