Fifth-Graders Graduate from D.A.R.E. Program

Fifth-graders from A.P. Terhune Elementary School received certificates Friday at a D.A.R.E. graduation ceremony.  D.A.R.E. stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education. The 10-week long program teaches children about different addictive substances, such as alcohol and marijuana, and the consequences of using them. The program was founded in Los Angeles in 1984. It has been implemented in 75 percent of school districts in the United States and in 42 other countries. Officer Scott Rappaport of the police department's Community Policing Unit spoke to the students at the assembly. Rappaport runs the D.A.R.E. program at the school. He spoke about how kids need to "rise above peer pressure" and about how abusing prescription medication, marijuana…

Man Charged with Intent to Distribute Heroin

Police said they pulled a vehicle over for an obstructed license plate, found dozens of bags of narcotic.

A 21-year-old Oakland resident was arrested Saturday afternoon, police said, after dozens of small glassine bags of suspected heroin were found in his vehicle after a traffic stop. Officer Vincent Ricciardelli decided to stop a Ford Explorer traveling west on Hamburg Turnpike because the SUV's license plate was obstructed, Police Capt. James Clarke said. The driver, Nickolaus Beck, 21, was in possession of 48 small glassine bags of suspected heroin, Clarke said, noting that each bag was stamped with the words “Karate Kid.” Clarke said police also found 12 empty glassine bags in Beck's pocket. And that bullshit that in the Paterson everyone get big ass bails. They usually dont unless the have previous charges or they are dealing. Students Learn How to Achieve a Natural High

Laugh at a joke. Take up long-distance running. Love someone — a boyfriend, girlfriend, mother, or grandfather. Do anything. Just don’t take drugs. Matt Bellace spoke to Wayne high school students Tuesday about the need for children to experience a natural high. The same type of chemical reaction that comes from smoking marijuana or snorting cocaine can be achieved by running for 45 minutes, loving someone, or laughing. Drugs rob students of their innocence and cause them to make unwise decisions, Bellace said. “You’ll never hear anyone say anything intelligent after: ‘Man, I was so wasted last night’,” Bellace said.
