Arrests Nip Garden Center Thefts in Bud, Cops Say

Montville Township bust could lead to charges from police departments in East Hanover, Boonton Township, Harding, Chester Township and Wayne, authorities say.

Montville police say the arrests of three people in connection with an alleged burglary at Condurso's Garden Center in the township could help solve thefts from other garden centers and floral shops in Morris and Passaic counties. After a burglar alarm was triggered at Condurso's around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, Montville Ptl. Robert Koetzner pulled over a woman who was driving on side streets away from the area of the garden center and farm market. The driver, Natalie Johnson, a 27-year-old whose last known address was in Morristown, and two passengers, who police say were sitting low in the car—Eric Allred, a 25-year-old Morristown resident, and Michael Blackman, a 19-year-old Randolph resident—were arrested in connection with the incident at…

How many cars are on the road at 2:30AM, it is not as if the officer had to choose from among thousands driving away from the area of where the alarm was triggered. Most of these types can't figure this little thing out. Anyone moving about at 2:30AM is conspicuous by presence alone, headlights are visible blocks away, tail lights too. Should DUI Alcohol Limit Be Lowered To 0.05 Percent?

The National Transportation Safety Board recommends reducing the limit. Some say it would save lives. Others say it's unreasonable.

One drink could be the standard for drunken driving – at least for some people if the National Transportation Safety Board has its way. On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from 0.08 percent to 0.05 percent. What do you think? Is this a reasonable proposal? According to a 2011 Mothers Against Drunk Driving report, the latest available data shows New Jersey ranked 31st out of 51 states (including the District of Columbia) in drunken driving injuries and deaths. That year, there were 193 DUI fatalities, MADD said. About 10,000 deaths nationwide a year are related to drunken driving. The NTSB says the lower limit would save 500 to 800 lives a year. Officials at the American …

Police Captain to be Honored at White House for Dramatic Rescue

Mark McGrath saved Officer Bob Franco's life after a tree fell on his vehicle during superstorm Sandy.

Police Capt. Mark McGrath, who helped save Officer Bob Franco’s life the night of superstorm Sandy, will be honored for his heroic act at the White House on Saturday. McGrath will be one of more than 40 officers from nine states, and the only one from New Jersey, that President Obama will honor as a National Association of Police Organizations Top Cop. McGrath crawled under live wires and wedged himself into a small space in Franco’s vehicle after an oak tree fell on top of it, pinning Franco inside. The tree also pinned Assistant Company 5 Fire Chief John Neukem inside his vehicle. Franco was out responding to a ruptured gas line. “I felt him, I heard him go to work,” Franco said in a news release issued by the White House. “The whole …

In every department there are great officers and poor ones, you can't argue that. I've known Mark since he was a Passaic Park police officer, he was great there and he is great for Wayne. As for making comments about the home burglaries in Wayne ?? WPD needed a little kick to get them going and start being a bit proactive. The burglaries are not sole to Wayne, all our surrounding towns are going …   more ›

850 Guns Turned in at Passaic Buyback Program

Authorities spend $112,000 to take 'lethal weapons out of circulation.'

An AK-47 assault rifle and a 12-gague, double-barred shotgun were two of the more than 850 firearms that were turned in at a two-day gun Passaic County buyback program held last week. Of the weapons that were turned in, 53 were illegal to own, either because they had unlawfully high magazine capacities or had been illegally modified. In addition to the AK-47 and the shotgun, two Tec 9 guns with 32-round magazines, an M1 rifle with a 20-round magazine and a sawed-off shotgun were handed in. Nearly 390 of the weapons were handguns. “It’s a credit to the citizens of Passaic County, as well as the other counties we’ve visited, that we’ve managed to take so many lethal weapons out of circulation,” Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa said in a …

Police Cracking Down on Unbuckled Motorists

Grant will fund overtime time for police to be on the lookout for drivers without seatbelts.

Police officers will actively look for unbuckled drivers in the coming weeks as part of the nationwide Click It or Ticket program. Between May 20 and June 2 police will man checkpoints and step up patrols to make sure drivers and passengers are using their seat belts. Wayne police officers will look for commuters sitting in the back of vehicles. According to the state Division of Highway Traffic Safety (DHTS), only 36 percent of people sitting in rear seats use seat belts. "Using a seat belt is the simplist way for a driver and his or her passengers to protect themselves when traveling," said Gary Poedubicky, acting director of the DHTS. A grant from the DHTS will be used to fund overtime pay the officers incur while on patrol as part of …
