Autopsy Identifies Reservoir Remains as Missing Oakland Woman

State officials announced Friday that a body found in a Passaic County reservoir Wednesday had been identified as Cathy Ann Debono, a borough woman missing since 2008.

A body discovered by police divers in a Passaic County reservoir Wednesday has been identified as an Oakland woman last seen in the borough over five years ago, state officials announced Friday. Cathy Ann DeBono, 49 at the time of her disappearance, was last seen in the borough on March 23, 2008, according to a state police missing persons database. According to a report by The Record, police said after she went missing that her cell phone and purse had been left at the home she shared with her husband and two children. Authorities say that New Milford police divers conducting training exercises in the Monksville Reservoir Wednesday afternoon came across the 2004 Toyota Camry that DeBono was driving the night of her disappearance. QB's Case Moved After Wayne Judges Recuse Themselves

Kevin Olsen's case to be heard in North Haledon after judges step aside due to potential conflicts of interest.

Traffic charges against Wayne Hills quarterback Kevin Olsen will be handled in North Haledon Municipal Court because the two Wayne judges have recused themselves from the case. The University of Miami-bound Olsen was scheduled to appear in Wayne Municipal Court Thursday on three traffic violations stemming from an April 25 incident. Judges Peter Weiss and Lawrenece Katz recused themselves from the case because they’ve had a professional relationship with the Olsen family, including Olsen’s father Chris, and have known the family for many years, said court Administrator Lori Ellicott. The matter has been referred to North Haledon Municipal Court but the court administrator there, Karen Lomascola, said a court date for Olsen’s case has not …

'License, Registration and Cell Phone,' NJ Cops May Soon Tell Drivers

Proposed bill would allow police officers to search cell phones after accidents. Supporters say it will help curb distracted driving-related incidents. Opponents say it violates drivers' rights.

When stopped by police, motorists usually are asked to present a driver's license and registration. If a bill just introduced before the state Senate becomes law, cell phones could be added to that list. The legislation, sponsored by state Sen. James Holzapfel (R-Ocean), would allow police to search a driver's cell phone without a warrant to determine if he or she was talking or texting immediately prior to a motor vehicle accident, according to an NJ.com report. Those in favor of the measure say it will give law enforcement officers—who must have "reasonable grounds" to demand the phone—an important asset in investigating crashes involving distracted driving, the article said. Using a cell phone while driving is a violation of New Jersey …

All of this was decided, rightly or wrongly, when cops were allowed to arrest you if you refused to take a breathalyzer and field sobriety test. Heck, the courts even permit flagrantly unconsitutional sobriety checkpoints. You're guilty until proven innocent not only when there is an incident, but even when not, as with the checkpoints.   more ›

Lawyer Claims Police Compromised Evidence

Wayne resident gave birth in 2009 to a baby later found dead in a garbage bag outside her home a few days later, authorities say.

A defense lawyer representing a Wayne woman charged with murdering her newborn infant claims police compromised evidence in the case, a report on NorthJersey.com states. The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office previously said in a press release that Keri Barry, then 22, gave birth to a full-term, live baby in her Wayne home on Dec. 11, 2009.  Barry’s family took her to Chilton Hospital in Pequannock where staff realized she had given birth. The family was concerned about the baby, who could not be located. Barry never informed either her family or hospital staff that she had given birth. Wayne police searched Barry’s home, with her consent, and collected garbage bags where the afterbirth was alleged to have been placed, the prosecutor’s …

Blacks in NJ Have Greater Chance of Being Busted for Pot, Report Says

ACLU calls for the decriminalization of pot and an end to racial profiling.

Blacks in New Jersey and across the country are far more likely to be arrested on marijuana-related charges than whites even though both groups are almost equally likely to use the drug, according to a report released this week by the American Civil LIberties Union. “[T]he War on Marijuana, like the larger War on Drugs of which it is a part, is a failure. It has needlessly ensnared hundreds of thousands of people in the criminal justice system, had a staggeringly disproportionate impact on African-Americans, and comes at a tremendous human and financial cost. The price paid by those arrested and convicted of marijuana possession can be significant and linger for years, if not a lifetime,” the authors wrote in “The War on Marijuana in …

RM, if you "think that marijuana is poisonous to individuals and society and we'd all be better off without it", then shouldn't you be happy for blacks that they have a greater deterrent than whites? From that perspective, whites are the real victims here.   more ›

Sheriff's Officer Indicted on Sexual Assault Charges

Wayne man abused two girls when they were between 8 and 15 years old, prosecutor says.

A Wayne man has been indicted on sexual assault charges, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia Valdes announced Monday. Thomas Ingham, 48, an officer with the Essex County Sheriff’s Office, was indicted on multiple charges: sexual assault, criminal sexual assault, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, and two counts of lewdness. If convicted, Ingham could serve 10 years in state prison on the sexual assault charge alone. He would have to serve 85 percent of the sentence for that charge before being eligible for parole. He is currently free on $150,000 bail.  Ingham was arrested Oct. 11 following an investigation by the prosecutor’s office Special Victims Unit, a press release issued by Valdes stated. The charges are based on …

We the People must stop deifying police officers. There are enough Bad Apples to fill an orchard. We deserve a law that adds sentencing enhancements for law enforcement personnel convicted of crimes, especially violent or sexual crimes. Phone Scammers Targeting Elderly Residents, Police Say

Calls involve telling residents they need a new Medicare insurance card or that they can receive a medical alert system.

Residents should be mindful about scammers who have called elderly Wayne residents recently, Wayne police said. One scam involves receiving a call from someone, usually a woman, explaining that the potential victim needs to replace his or her Medicare insurance card. The caller tells the resident that The Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, requires the resident be given a new card, police said, and asks for the person’s banking information. Some of the victims reported the caller had an accent that was difficult to understand, police said. Another scam involves receiving an automated phone call advising someone they can receive a medical alert system free of charge. If interested, they are transferred to someone who asks them for personal …
