A Wayne middle school student received an award for demonstrating the positive effect her parents had on her life as part of the state Division of Family Development’s annual Teen Media Contest. Sophia Jeon, a student at Schuyler-Colfax Middle School, took third place in the middle school category of the contest. Entrants had to illustrate the ways in which their parents have instilled the importance of community service and being a well-rounded student. Indians win their first-round state playoff game.
Wayne Valley’s Mike D’Amato pitched a complete game in the Indians’ defeat of Eastside in the first round of the state baseball tournament, Jersey Sports Now reported. The manager of the Tick Tock Diner charged with hiring a hitman to kill his uncle is free after posting $600,000 bail Tuesday, NorthJersey.com reported. Georgios Spyropoulos, 45, of Clifton, was charged with conspiracy to commit murder, attempt to commit murder and unlawful possession of a weapon in April. He pleaded not guilty to the charges. In an effort to advance himself financially, Spyropoulos hired a man who turned out to be a confidential informant for the state police, to kill his uncle Alexandros Sgourdos, co-owner of the famous Clifton Diner. Construction on a new anchor store at the Wayne Town Center is expected to begin soon, town officials said. Work is scheduled to begin in the next week, said town planner John Szabo. Cleanup crews will be working to remove debris and weeds from the site before construction begins. Large piles of dirt have already been removed the site. Szabo said officials have met with project representatives recently in an attempt to "move the project along," Szabo said. A new business in town works to help those who have lost their legs a chance to walk again. Sunshine Prosthetics and Orthotics held its grand opening and a open house on Thursday. The facility provides personalized care by designing custom devices for physically-challenged adults and children with prosthetics. Owner Brooke Artesi is an amputee. She lost part of her right leg and foot when she was 15. “Each of our patients has a unique need,” Artesi said in a press release. “Providing the best care possible for our patients is our main focus and my goal is to keep people active.” Artesi competes annually in the Extremity Games, an adaptive sports competition for amputees, and has won awards for both rock climbing and kayaking. Wayne Interfaith Network moved its food pantry to the location earlier this year.
The Wayne Interfaith Network’s food pantry is now open and accepting donations at the Wayne YMCA. WIN held a grand opening for the pantry nearlier this month. The food pantry used to be located at Packanack Community Church. Officials decided to move the pantry to the Wayne YMCA earlier this year because there is more storage space there. Excess food was piling up at the church and would often be kept in the hallways and near the church entrance. As a result of the treatment, Limor has been unable to work. A beefsteak dinner “Coming Together to Make a Difference” is being held to help Limor and her family pay medical bills and household expenses. Family-friendly event begins at 10 a.m.
The town’s annual Memorial Day parade will be held on Monday beginning at 10 a.m. on Valley Road. Various groups, including Boy Scout troops, Girl Scout troops, high school marching bands, civic organizations, and emergency services personnel will march in the parade. Local and county officials typically also march in the annual event. The hour-long parade will make it way down Valley Road and end at the municipal complex. People sit in lawn chairs along Valley Road to watch the parade. Residents are encouraged to show up early to get a good spot to sit.
