Students Fighting Cancer with Comedy

Hakuna Matata Fundraising spearheading Wayne Hills Comedy Night next week.

Students at are working together to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

Hakuna Matata Fundraising, Wayne-based a non-profit organization, is partnering with several students to host the Wayne Hills Comedy Night for Cancer. The event is at Wayne Hills from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, March 1. Tickets cost $8 for students and $10 for adults.

Several students will be on stage during the event: Max Blake, Justin Diamond, and David Boronow, a junior, will perform comedy sets and Rachael Fikslin and Brian Phelan will play music.

Comedian Moody McCarthy will perform a comedy set. McCarthy has appeared on Last Comic Standing and Star Search.

Boronow, a 17-year-old Hills student founded Hakuna Matata, which mean’s “there are no worries” in Swahili, with Alyssa Scheiner to help make a real difference in peoples’ lives. He got the idea to found the group from a school assignment his freshman year of high school. He had to complete an assignment about making a difference in the world.

“Everyone either created a T-shirt or a Facebook page, but I wanted to do something that was practical,” Boronow said.

The group has held several fundraisers in town, one for flood victims at restaurant where they raised $600 for flood victims and another for the Tomorrow’s Children Fund.

Boronow said the group is working to become a licensed non-profit organization.

“There’s so much to do and so many people out there who need help,” Boronow said. “We just want to do as much good for as many people as we can.”
