The Wayne Nationals little league team was honored Wednesday night for winning their sectional championship this season.
The team finished in fourth in the state competition, out of about 300 teams, and lost to Nutley 14-1 on July 26. It was the first time in 43 years a little league team from Wayne advanced as far as the Nationals did this season. The Wayne little league team won the 1970 Little League World Series.
Councilman Al Sadowski and Mayor Chris Vergano presented each player with a commemorative certificate at a council meeting Wednesday night.
Jim Pellegrini, executive vice president of the Wayne Little League said that it isn’t too often a team goes as far as the Nationals did this season and that he was proud of what the team, including the coaches, accomplished.
