Girl Scout Teaches Kids About Soccer

For the second consecutive year, Brigette Cohen is putting on the KickStart soccer camp for kindergarteners. Cohen first put on the camp last year for her Girl Scout Gold Award community service project.

Brigitte Cohen is helping kindergarteners learn the sport of soccer.

Cohen, her friends, and some local coaches are hosting the second annual KickStart soccer camp. The three-day long camp is designed to introduce soccer to children entering kindergarten.

Cohen developed the project last year for her Gold Award for Girl Scouts, the highest award that a scout can receive. She’s organizing the camp again this year.

“I liked organizing the running the camp so much last year that I decided to do it again,” Cohen said. “There’s so much you can learn from sports, especially soccer. There’s discipline, patience, and teamwork, and you’re never too young to start learning about those things. Plus, it’s just a fun thing to do with your friends.”

Cohen's sister Jackie is to purchase equipment and uniforms for a Special Olympics team in Passaic County. The project is a part of her Girl Scout Gold Award.

Cohen has enjoyed the sport from a young age. She played on the traveling team at the , the Wayne Soccer Club, and at the Wayne Police Athletic League. She’s also played on the varsity team at .

The camp will be held Monday June 25 to Wednesday, June 27 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Wayne Police Athletic League. Several local high school coaches and volunteers will be at the camp teaching and supervising the children. Registration is limited to 30 children About a dozen children are already registered to attend.

Registration costs $30 per child. No refunds will be issued after registration is complete.

“I’ve played soccer for years and it’s given me so much, I’ve learned so much from it, I thought, why not try and let others experience the same things I have,” Cohen said. “The camp will give kids the chance to learn the basics of the sports, cooperation, healthy competition, and to have fun too.”

Each child will be given a T-shirt and soccer ball for attending the camp.

Parents or guardians need to fill out a registration form and a check to the Wayne Police Athletic League, 1 PAL Drive, Wayne, NJ 07470. Checks should be made out to the Wayne Police Athletic League with soccer camp written in the memo line.
