Wayne Schools OK 1.89% Tax Increase

Approved budget will mean a $167 tax increase for the average homeowner, report says.

The average Wayne homeowner will see a $167 school tax increase this year, NorthJersey.com reported.

According to the report, the Board of Education recently voted 7-1 to pass a $144.1 million budget for the 2014-15 school year. It represents a 1.89% tax increase, the report said.

A big component of the budget, the report said, is unfunded state mandates, which total about $17 million. The district received $3.79 million in state aid, which is an increase from last year, but still a significant decrease from the $6.7 million it got in the 2009-10 school year, the report said.

The board had some disagreements while approving the budget.

Trustee Cathy Kazan voted no, saying that she felt the budget process was not transparent enough to residents, the report said. Other trustees disagreed, it said.
