Students Design, Sell T-Shirts For Charity [Video]

Students at Wayne Valley High School are learning about marketing and advertising and raising money for charity in the process.

Students from Jocelyn Voskian’s business classes are designing, marking, and selling T-shirts to raise money for national charities.

Students are divided into three teams. Each team is creating an original design for their T-shirt. Each team must try and create their T-shirts in as cost-effective a manner as they can in an effort to make the most money possible. Students must also develop a marketing plan utilizing traditional and viral, electronic-based, strategies. 

Teams will donate their profits to the American Cancer Society, St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, and the Susan G. Korman for the Cure.

It is the second year the project is being held. Students donated $12,000 last year.

“We want to top that amount this year,” Voskian said.

The teams picked the non-profits they did because of people’s familiarity with them and the extent to which the diseases they deal with, mainly cancer, reaches into society.

“Everyone is affected by breast cancer,” said Rebeca Trujillo. Trujillo’s team is raising money for the Susan G. Korman for the Cure. “Everyone either is related to or knows someone who’s had breast cancer. Everyone is affected by cancer somehow.”

Students will sell the T-shirts from March 16 to March 24.

To purchase a T-shirt, submit a form to Voskian, any team member, or via mail. Forms should be mailed to Wayne Valley to Voskian’s attention.
