Presentation on Possible Security Referendum to be Held Thursday

Officials will discuss what security and safety upgrades a $5 million referendum could finance.

A presentation on a possible referendum to fund safety and security upgrades to the district’s 14 schools will be given at a Board of Education meeting Thursday.

The possible $5 million project would upgrade security equipment in each building, including new cameras, closed circuit televisions, panic alarms, motion sensors, and possibly moving school offices closer to front doors.

Officials hope to obtain a $3 million state grant to help finance the project.

The Board’s finance committee has examined all the possible upgrades and funding options, which include using money from the capital budget or funding it in the next fiscal year, said Robert Ceberio, the committee’s chairman.

“There is still a lot of work to be done to determine if we would even have a referendum,” Ceberio said last month.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the district’s office at 50 Nellis Drive. It will be broadcast live online.
