Pavlak will Lead Board of Education

Kingston, Stinziano sworn in; Jimenez, Badiner are vice presidents.

Donald Pavlak Jr., Robyn Kingston, and Laura Stinziano were sworn into three-year terms on the board of education Thursday night.

Pavlak was chosen as the board president. James Jimenez and Mitchell Badiner will be the board’s first and second vice presidents, respectively. They were all unanimously selected. Their terms will last one year.

“I’m honored I was chosen. Now we get down to work,” Pavlak said. “Our first priority is to hire a superintendent.”

The board met with candidates for the position in executive session, which was held after the board's first public work session Thursday.

Pavlak said the board’s “second priority” is to negotiate with the town to get the budget approved. Residents rejected the district’s $126.6 million tax levy 3,091 to 2,977 April 27. Those totals include provisional and absentee ballots.

Pavlak said the board and town have formed committees to discuss the budget and come up with a solution.

The town council will examine the budget and recommend the district cut a specific amount and specific programs from the budget. The cuts cannot undermine the district’s ability to provide basic education or take away the district’s financial stability. The board does not have to adhere to the specific cuts, but must adhere to the proposed dollar amount.

The board can appeal the cuts to the state board of education.
