Panthers Player From Wayne Opens Up About Son's Struggles

Former Wayne Hills football star talks about fatherhood and the importance of family.

Carolina Panthers tight end and former Wayne Hills High School football star Greg Olsen opened up about raising a child with a congenital heart defect in a Father's Day video on the team's NFL website.

Olsen's son, T.J., was diagnosed with a rare heart defect before he was born in October 2012. Two days after he was born, he had his first open heart surgery and since then, he has had another.

"I wish I was as tough as T.J.," Olsen said in the interview for the video. "If I was as tough as him, I'd be in good shape."

T.J. Olsen is a twin and was born via C-section with his sister, Talbot. The Olsens also have another child.

In the NFL interiew, surgeon Benjamin Peeler described the hardships the youngster has already experienced, but said he is doing well. Greg Olsen also described his son as a fighter.

"He is a fiery guy. He is, sometimes, a huge handful, but he has to be. If he wasn't, he wouldn't have done so well," he said.
