Celeste Gagliardi, the principal of Packanack Elementary School, has resigned her position effective July 1.
The resignation was announced at the board of education's May 26 meeting. Gagliardi was to enter the last year of a three-year contract with the district. 'Personal reasons' was the explanation given on the meeting agenda for her departure.
Several parents who spoke at the meeting said that Gagliardi has made a positive difference in their children's lives.

Other parents against bringing her back for another year at the May 5 board meeting. They said she is overly harsh in the way she disciplines students and did not agree with some of the policies she enacted.
Gagliardi did not return messages seeking comment.
