High School Students Could be America's Next Top Chefs

Three teams battle for kitchen supremacy in annual cook off.

The different smells filled the gymnasium. For hours you could hear the bubbling of shrimp being fried and see creme brulee being made.

Students ran around the room like chefs on "Iron Chef America" Friday night during the fifth annual Student Culinary Competition at Wayne Valley High School.

Three teams, each with a different theme, battled out to see who could cook the best entree, desert, and appetizer. Kids from the school's wood shop classes also participated in the event; they created large stand up chefs that guided attendees into the gymnasium.

The Elemental Team took home the Best Appetizer and People's Choice Awards. Team Portugal won Best Overall and Best Entree, and Team Japan won "Best Dessert and the Team Spirit Awards. School employees even participated in the event. They hosted a "road kill" themed table and served things like "swamp water," a Gatorade-based concoction, and dishes "allegedly" containing such things as raccoon meat. The food served at that table was not entered into the contest portion of the event.
