Elementary School Report Cards Released

Students at John F. Kennedy, Albert P. Terhune, James Fallon and Lafayette Elementary Schools performed well on standardized tests.

The 2009-10 School Report Cards were issued by the New Jersey Department of Education this week. The reports contain information including class size, standardized test performance, per pupil spending and more.

Students in Wayne public elementary schools received, on average, 12 fewer minutes of instructional time each day, 5 hours and 30 minutes, compared to the state average of 5 hours and 42 minutes.

The district spent slightly more than $7,900, on total classroom instruction per student; the state average was more than $8,100.

The total comparative cost per pupil, which represents comparisons with districts of similar budget types, is virtually the same for the district, $13,700, than the state’s, $13,800.

In total, the district spent about $600 less per pupil, $14,900, than the state average of $15,500; those numbers include costs such as transportation.

JOHN F. KENNEDY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

The school's population dropped from 461 students in 2006-2007 to 448 in 2009-2010. Nineteen percent of the faculty entered and left the school during the school year; nearly four times the state average.

Students received 39 fewer minutes of instruction, 5 hours and 3 minute, when compared with the state average of 5 hours and 42 minutes.

Approximately 80 students, or 18 percent, of students required Individualized Education Programs. IEPs require the school district to provide support services for their identified disability.

The average class size, 18.7 students, was slightly more than the state average of 18.2. The institution had no instructional, multi-media capable computers manufactured after July 1, 2006; the state average was 3.6 students for every computer. Information on the number of computers students had access to was not available. 

English was the first language spoken in 62 percent of homes. Spanish and Arabic were the next highest at about 7 percent each; Korean and Russian were next at 3.8 and 2.5 percent, respectively.

Thirty-one students, or 7 percent of the population, were classified as possessing limited English proficiency.

The school's student to teacher ratio 12:1, the state average was 10.6:1. The percentage of teachers possessing a master's degree increased from 51 percent in 2008-2009 to nearly 62 while the number of teachers possessing a bachelor's degree decreased by more than 7 percent.

ALBERT P. TERHUNE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

The school's population dropped from 423 students in 2006-2007 to 409 in 2009-2010. More than 9 percent of the faculty entered and left the school during the year.

The average class size of 17 students was slightly smaller than the state average of 18. The institution had no instructional, multi-media capable computers manufactured after July 1, 2006; the state average was 3.6 students for every computer. English was the first language spoken in 74 percent of homes. Korean was the next highest spoken language first in 4 percent of homes. Spanish and Hindi were next with about 3 percent each.

The school's population dropped from 85 students in 2006-2007 to 76 in 2009-2010. A staggering 61 percent of the faculty entered and left the school during the year.

The average class size of 18 students was the same as the state average. The institution had no instructional, multi-media capable computers manufactured after July 1, 2006; the state average was 3.6 students for every computer. English was the first language spoken in 71 percent of homes. Spanish was the next highest spoken language first in 8 percent of homes. Arabic and Italian were next with 4 and 3 percent, respectively.
