DePaul Dance Team Featured In Talent Show

The dance team will be featured in MSG Varsity’s annual Talent Show competition on Sunday.

The Spartans and seven other teams from schools in the New York-New Jersey area to participate in the show's Dance Ensemble competition.

“We’re so excited to be here,” said Rita Aboyoun, one of the coaches. “We have such a talented group of girls who have really worked hard this year.”

The 17-member dance team was founded in 2007. The team can only practice about once a week because most of the girls are members of local dance troupes or regularly dance at local studios. The team regularly performs at basketball and lacrosse games and at pep rallies. Wayne residents Amanada Giuliano and Nicole Muncgal are on the team.

The team was originally formed as a student club, but eventually became a full-fledged competitive team. The team’s performance includes a variety of musical styles, including jazz, tap, and hip-hop.

“Being a private school in the area, we have a lot more athletic teams who seem to get the recognition and the chance to compete at a higher level so we’re thrilled that the girls are able to get rewarded for their hard work by being chosen for the competition," Aboyoun said.

This is the second year the talent show is being held. The competition is divided into three categories: individual vocal performers, dance ensembles, and vocal ensembles.  

Each week, two local acts are featured on a show broadcast on MSG Varsity. DePaul will face off against the Sachem North Varsity Arrowettes on May 6 at 8:30 p.m.

Residents can visit the following Web site and vote for the Spartans. Voting ends Thursday, May 10 at 9 a.m. Individuals can vote as many times as they want.

Another two teams will face off May 13. The four winners chosen will be paired off and will face off again on another show in May. A winner will announced on June 3. The grand prize is a trip to see “Memphis” on Broadway and attend a workshop hosted by the show’s choreographers.
