Cheerleaders Win First Place at Competition

DePaul Catholic team named overall winner at event held earlier this month.

The DePaul Catholic High School cheerleading team won first place overall at the annual UCC Fall Invitational competition on Nov. 18.

The team does not typically enter competitions nor does it cheer together after football season concludes.

“Just because we don’t compete doesn’t mean we can compete,” said Coach Rita Aboyoun, a Wayne resident. “I really wanted other people to see how good we are. Cheerleading is very popular and we know we’re good enough to compete with good teams out there.”

Many of the girls are accomplished dancers and are members of dance troops.

Five seniors also won first place for holding a particular pose in place for the longest period of time, one minute and 30 seconds.

“I’m extremely proud of everyone who cheered this season,” Aboyoun said.
