Board Says Fellowship of Christian Athletes Can Meet at Anthony Wayne School

Lease agreement with Bethany Church pulled from agenda.

Several items were discussed at the Wayne Board of Education's public work session last night.

  • The board has granted permission for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes to meet at Anthony Wayne Middle School. A student requested the club, which has "volunteer" status, be given permission to use school facilities. Because of the organization's religious nature, the district will not pay for the group's adviser, as they do for other school-sponsored student clubs and organizations. "There's many cases where, as long as the district is not paying for the activity, they have a right like any other citizen to use the facility," said board President Robert Ceberio. The group will begin meeting this year.
  • A lease agreement between the district and was pulled from the meeting agenda and not acted on because the board wants to clarify some legal issues in the contract. The agreement allows church congregants to park their vehicles in the Randall Carter Elementary School parking lot. The agreement is set to expire this year. "We were not happy with some of the terms of the contract so we pulled it," Ceberio said. "We asked our attorney to look at various things in it that were not in the contract that we thought should be." Ceberio said it may take a couple of meetings to resolve the issue.
  • The board is discussing with Interim Superintendent the possibility of hiring an interim assistant superintendent. Previously, the district had two assistant superintendents.
  • The student dance at Wayne Valley High School will be reinstated this year thanks to a financial donation to the district.
