Marysol Berrios is the new assistant superintendent of the Wayne School District.

The approved Berrios’ appointment and contract at a meeting Thursday.

“I believe that I have a lot to offer the Wayne community with the experiences I’ve had,” Berrios said. “I feel that everything I’ve done up to this point gives me a good framework to be able to respond to the kinds of needs that occur in a district such as Wayne.”

Berrios has 24 years of experience in education. She is the special assistant to the superintendent of the Paterson School District. She oversees a variety of programs in the district, including the professional development training for all district administrators.

She is also certified to teach English as a Second Language. She is currently writing her dissertation for her doctorate degree at Seton Hall University.

Berrios’s tenure will begin as soon as possible, but she said she is anticipating Feb. 6 to be her first day on the job. Her contract expires on June 30. Her annual $160,000 salary will be prorated for that time period.

The move comes only a . Gonzalez called Berrios’s hiring “a great move” for the district.

“In order to move the district forward we have to make sure that we have all the right people in all the right places," Gonzalez said. "This appointment provides me with the confidence that we have all the right people in all the right places."

I've lived here for 11 years and couldn't say any more how long I've waited for this. Let's see how much progress this move could provide us. We have lacked so much in so many areas. I speak as an educator, and our dissarray of control has affected our kids beyond our control.

Is this in response to the Coach Olsen debacle? Ms. Berrios will you address the inappropriate problem of Coach Olsen being Coach AND Department Head? And other then "a great move" can Mr. Gonzalez explain to the people of Wayne why we need this position and exactly what her duties will be?

Why do we need to add more high salaried employees at the top of the food chain? Why do we need an assistant superintendent for the Wayne school district? We just spent a large amount of money (State cap) to bring in another Superintendent. It appears that the BOE feels that moeny is no object just pass it on to the taxpayers. The educatuion budget is out of control. I don't understand the comment "We have lacked so much in so many areas" The taxpayers of Wayne have continued to support the wayne school system even in financail hard times.

At last night's BOE meeting, board members voted unanimously on a new policy which states that administrators and supervisors are not permitted to coach or hold extracurricular positions. This policy is effective July 1, 2012. Mr Olsen will no longer be able to be both Athletic Director/Department Head and football coach.

Viva la revelucion!!!! Remember what Omar Minaya did when he became GM of the Mets? We all know how that turned out. Me thinks something stinks - probably frijoles. Adios.

I agree. Those that complain that the district is spending money on leadership and stability are short-sighted. We are a good district and with the right leadership and strategic plan we can be a GREAT district. We need our leaders to ensure development for our faculty and hold everyone accountable for excellence - raise the bar.

What we are lacking is high salary administrative positions in Wayne! BOE is increasingly becoming a joke and irrelevant.
Dory Degen January 08, 2012 at 04:31 PM
Bob, we don't need her. This is just a political move becasue of all the uproar over the BOE's embarrassing flip-flopping over the decisions made about the Wayne Hills football players' arrests and still being able to play in games after being bullied by Coach Olsen. It is their way of trying to appease the angry public and repair their reputations in the public eye.

With a current African American President, one would assume discrimination merely exists through the creeks. Unmistakably, when the creek is in ones backyard, ignorance becomes a visible stream.
Justice January 10, 2012 at 01:29 PM
Why are we paying for another position that is ridiculous? The Wayne BOE is putting top-heavy corporations to shame
Justice January 10, 2012 at 01:30 PM
@Marie, please explain your comment regarding discrimination. Thank you.

The new Superintendant didn't take long to give an old friend a job. They worked together in Paterson. She has a certification to teach English as a Second Language and as an administrator. She is currently special asst. to the superitendant of schools in the Paterson School District. A failing school district that is among the worse in NJ. Nepotism, wasteful spending etc etc in that district. Everytime the State has changed the school superintendant they brought in thier friends for jobs and things kept getting worse. Now its happening in Wayne. Hey' Whats another $160,000.00 position? We will see how long these two last. Remember the last two? They came from Paterson also.

What a joke this is on the taxpayers of Wayne. Its so blatant her connection with the new Superintendant. Her record in Paterson isn't all that good. Just ask anyone who works there. Its funny we keep taking people from a school district that is the worse one in the State and bring them to Wayne to work here. The new Super is here a month and his plate is already overflowing. What's next an Asst. for the Asst. Superintendant. The dirt on this will eventually come out and bring more bad publicity to Wayne.
Bob January 21, 2012 at 02:56 PM
Isn't it amazing how the Wayne BOE continues to fill these positions at high salaries with people that come from either failed or marginal schools. That comment in todays parer says it all. His plate is overflowing so he needs to bring in his friend from the failed Paterson school district at what $160M on top of his $170M.Talk about over load at the top. I wonder how long these folks will last. We as taxpayers are being taken for a ride with this BOE & the Wayne school system. You know that they will increase the budget by the max of 2% so get ready taxpayers of Wayne. In tough economic times where people are unemployed or no raises they continue to spend our hard earned money. They have a license to steal all in the name of the "children". Its not about the children its about their pockets & what they can get. The BOE should all be voted out.
Pad January 24, 2012 at 11:47 PM
These two will end up leaving here with alot of the taxpayers money. Just like the last two robber barons. He is being paid very well here in Wayne and the new Asst. Superintendant at $160K is disgusting. Now taxpayers can't even vote on the budget. This will be a disaster for all Wayne taxpayers again. Why do you think they took your vote away? Because the taxpayers are fed up and they know they can't get a budget passed so easily so now they took your vote away. How Democratic of them.
Dory Degen February 06, 2012 at 04:59 PM
maybe they figured they'd have an extra salary after they can one of coach olsen's positions.
