8-Day Winter Break Highlights Approved Wayne Schools Calendar

The 2014-15 school calendar calls for school to start on Sept. 4 next year.

Wayne students will enjoy a week-and-a-half long winter break and a weeklong spring break next school year, according to the district calendar that was passed at a recent Board of Education meeting and posted on the district website.

The 2014-15 calendar, passed at the Feb. 6 meeting, calls for school to begin on Thursday, Sept. 4. Winter Break goes from Wednesday, Dec. 24 through Friday, Jan. 2. Spring Break starts Monday, March 30 and runs through Friday, April 3.

According to the calendar, four emergency closing/snow days are built into the calendar. Any more used than that will be added back into the calendar from Spring Break. If days aren't used, more days off will be added surrounding Memorial Day.

Why are there 5 Full Staff Inservice Days where students are off when past calendar had 3 Full Staff Inservice Days??? Do they really need to add 2 more? And then take away 1 snow day. Next years calendar has 4 snow days with this year's calendar at 5 days and we're just about to use them up.

It is quite possible that the increased in-service days are related to the Common Core roll-out.

What sense does it make to start school on Sept. 4th two days before Labor Day weekend? Many people and families are away for this weekend. Pretty soon school will be starting in August and ending in July at this rate. Cut the days off during the school year. There is absolutely no need to have a Spring Break or be closed for teachers convention as most teachers don't attend it. They are in the Caribbean sunning themselves. If your away during teachers convention everyone you meet on vacation is a teacher!

Jack Q - Common Core started with the present 2013-2014 school year. They needed more training BEFORE it was implemented, not during. Pad - September 4th two days before Labor Day Weekend??? Labor Day is Monday September 1st.

LA Sorry glanced at wrong calendar. I still feel they have too many days off during the school months and the teachers convention should be in the summer not during school time. This is why our children are falling behind. They attend school less then any other of the leading nations. We still go by an outdated agrarian calendar from when children had to work the farm fields. There is absolutely no reason for all these days off at all.

LA, I am aware that it was implemented last year. However, in light of less than stellar performance by admin and teachers, it probably warranted another in service. Not saying I agree with adding another day. Personally, I agree with Pad about getting rid of the teacher's convention. Not worth the 2 days off in my mind, unless attendance is made mandatory.
