3 Schools Will Have Make Up Day Feb. 19

Pines Lake, Theunis Dey, and George Washington were closed for an extra day following Tropical Storm Sandy.

Three Wayne schools will be in session for a minimal day on Tuesday, Feb. 19.

School will be in session on that day at Pines Lake and Theunis Dey elementary schools and George Washington Middle School. The schools were scheduled to be closed for winter recess that day but officials decided to have a make-up day.

All schools in the district were closed for a week following Tropical Storm Sandy but those three schools remained closed for another day. The missing days were made up at other points in the district's schedule but the additional day needs to be made up at those schools.

Administrators sought input from the community to make an informed decision about what day the schools should be in session for, said Superintendent of Schools Raymond Gonzalez.

The Board of Education is scheduled to approve a revised school calendar at a meeting Thursday.

Please tell me why our Board approved school calendar has provisions for "Make-up Emergency Days" which are April 5th if one day is needed, April 4th & 5th if two days are needed and April 3rd, 4th & 5th if three days are needed? We also have provisions in our calendar if we have unused Emergency Days. Why would we make this decision now when we don't even know if we will use all of our snow days? Dr. Gonzalez and the Board already made provisions in the schedule last November, we had NO phones due to Hurricane Sandy but I was told by Dr. Gonzalez that a phone message went out and it was posted on the internet that there was going to be a vote about changing our "Board approved Calendar" What was the purpose of that if most of us had NO phones or internet? Welcome to Wayne Dr. Gonzalez why don't you try following our School Calendar? When the roads are icy and not safe why don't you consider a delayed opening instead of putting our children, parents and staff at risk as you did in January?

I believe the goal here is to get these 3 schools up to the same amount of days attended as all the other schools. The remainder of the calendar would stay the same. I got the daily messages from Dr. Gonzalez on my cellphone during the storm and the final message was to let everyone know that our children would attend school the following week instead of having 3 days off. That was the change to the calendar at that time. I realize that some people couldn't charge their cellphones that week but many parents got the messages and appreciated them. Would you prefer that he not even try to get in touch with people? I do not see why everyone is so quick to bash our Superintendent. Like everyone else, he did his best in an extreme situation. I don't see what is objectionable about this change, particularly when the parents were given the opportunity to pick the day.

@Leila Oxford, Dr. Gonzalez came from Failed school districts. And brought his friends along with him. What more could you expect from are BOE that hired him? Give him time and he'll bring are school system down also.

It's "our" not "are". And you criticize the school system.

Paterson schools didn't fail because of Gonzalez. I'm sure you realize that. As far as his friends coming w/ him to Wayne, isn't that what usually happens? It's WHO you know, not WHAT you know.

@Leanbean, so the schools were already bad before Gonzalez? Interesting. I think it is ridiculous to criticize this current administration at every turn. With all the turmoil there has been since Nuccitello, I think there has been stability in the past couple of years. Whether that continues, that remains to be seen, but I will give him the benefit of the doubt.
