November Events at WPL for Young Adults

Hello everyone!

I hope you’re all enjoying autumn, school, and thinking about participating the different Y.A. activities offered here at the library. ;

I’d like to congratulate Megan Kick on winning the middle school Short Story contest. She is in the 7th grade at Schuyler Colfax. You can read “Unknown Lives” on the Facebook page (link to that is below my signature) and it is also posted at the Children’s desk.

The following is a list of upcoming events. There is a variety of exciting programs to choose from, though I’d love to see you at all of them!
(Don’t forget to register for the rest of October dates: TAG meeting on Oct 24th at 6:30; Chess on Oct 26th at 10:30; Mummy Fun on Oct. 30th at 3:30.)

WPL Y.A. Chess Club
Event Date:
11/2/2013
Event Time: 10:30 AM – 12:30 pm
Young Adults in grades 6-12 are welcome to play chess. You can learn from each other or improve your skills.
This casual gathering will occur monthly on a Saturday, in the Storytime room.

Registration required in person or by phone. Wayne kids get preference for sign-up availability. For Saturday November 2nd session, sign-up begins Friday October 25th.

AND: 11/30, same time. Registration for that date starts on 11/22.

Tech-help from Teens for your Electronic Devices (Sponsored by T.A.G .)

Event Time: 10:30 AM- 12 noon
Electronic gadgets and digital-speak can be frustrating! Get help from those born into the age of technology.

Adults: REGISTER in advance with Children's Department by phone or in person, starting Thursday Oct.24th. Then come to the Storytime Room in the Children’s Department to get tech-help from members of the Teen Advisory Group, the WH & WV Nat'l Honor Society, and other kids.

T(w)eens: We need your expertise! Young Adults grades 6-12 (in TAG or not)who are interested in volunteering their time and sharing their tech skills should contact Eleana to enlist as a helper.

Hip-Hop, Graphic Novels, AND Education

What does hip-hop, graphic novels, and education have to do with each other? Empowering people with positivity!

Hip Hop Icon, Darryl "DMC" McDaniels of Legendary Group RUN DMC, presents an inspirational talk to the teens and tweens of Wayne, about combining his passions in a positive way. There will also be a brief Q&A following his lecture.

Open to Wayne kids in grades 6-12. Advanced registration is required to attend this special presentation; sign-ups start on Monday October 28th, in person or by phone.

Yoga Basics with April

Event Time: 2:30 PM- 3:30
Our yoga-mentor April will guide the teens & tweens through the meaning and basics of yoga. Boys & girls can learn the fundamentals of this physical and mental practice.

Registration for students in grades 6-12 begins Tuesday Oct 29th; Wayne kids get preference for sign-ups.

Cross-Country Biking for Health and Literacy Awareness

Kevin Vrabel, author of The Next Great Thing, will tell the story of writing his book while riding over 3,000 miles from California to New Jersey by bicycle. He and his two nephews crossed the country in 55 days and dedicated the ride to raising awareness for healthy living, reading and writing. Come hear the story of the trip told by Kevin and his photographs and share ideas on literacy and leading a healthy lifestyle.

Open to kids in grades 5-12. Sign-ups begin Monday, Nov. 11th; Wayne students get preference for registration.

Teen Advisory Group Monthly Meeting (T.A.G.)

Event Time: 6:30 PM- 7:30
The Teen Advisory Group is made up of Wayne kids in grades 6-12 who are interested in attending regular monthly meetings(with Eleana, leading them to be advocates of the library amongst their peers, to help with different library needs, and to share their voice here about Y.A. program & book related activities.

We meet once a month on a Thursday evening for an hour.
Other pluses: get to know other like-minded kids, commit to volunteerism, AND get snacks & beverages! (Goodies funded by the Friends of the WPL.)
