As you may know, the federal government provides different types of assistance to victims of natural disasters (like hurricanes or floods). FEMA loans are one example.

Another example of government help is the ability to deduct disaster losses on your tax return. If an area has been declared a federal disaster area, a person can amend their prior year’s return and deduct the loss by changing their 2010 return even though the loss occurred in 2011! This will allow people to get money sooner. Otherwise, they must wait for next tax season in 2012.

As you know, Alice and I own Freedom Tax Service in Bloomfield, NJ. After physically helping our neighbors and friends with flood related damage for the past few weeks, we took a step back and asked ourselves how we could continue to help once cleanup has ended.

We decided to consult with hurricane and flood victims, and, if appropriate, amend their 2010 tax returns for FREE until the end of November. We only ask that anyone interested call 973-337-6894 to schedule an appointment because we anticipate high demand. Again, there is no charge for this service whatsoever. It does not matter who prepared their 2010 return.

Thanks Ruby for helping to get this message out there.
