Wayne Plans $2M Road Repaving

Township must now decide which roads to repave.

Wayne will spend nearly $2 million repaving township roads this year. Now, officials are deciding exactly which roads those will be.

The council introduced a bond ordinance at its April 2 meeting that would allow it to borrow $1,990,000 for the 2014 roads program, as seen in the video of the council meeting posted on the township website.

“We’re luck to live in a town where we spend money every year to repave our roads,” Councilwoman Lonni Miller said at the meeting.

“Even though the [cost] looks very large, I feel that it’s money well spent.”

According to Township Administrator Neal Bellet, Wayne got a late start this year on examining roadways to determine which were the most in need of repaving because of the harsh winter. Bellet said he works with the township engineer each year to survey township roads and compile a priority list of needy streets in each ward.

Council members briefly debated whether roads should be prioritized by ward or on an overall, township-wide ranking of the worst roadways. Bellet said that in the past, the town has focused on the worst roadways, but has also tried to “share the wealth” in terms of allocating funds for road repaving to each ward.

Township officials say they hope to finish all of the road paving projects they decide on by the fall.
