Wayne Council Moves to Attract More Businesses to Township

The township council is making changes to its Economic Development Commission that lawmakers say may help attract businesses to move into Wayne.

At its meeting on March 5, the council introduced an ordinance that would change the Commission from a nine-member body to one of 13 members. Of the additional four people, one will be the President of the Tri-County Chamber of Commerce.

In the video of the council meeting posted on the township’s website, sponsoring Councilman James Jimenez said this ordinance “hopefully will be the first of many positive changes for the EDC.”

“We all know that Wayne has a lot to offer, but we can’t forget that there are over 500 municipalities all looking to do the same thing,” he said.

“Hopefully the changes you’ll see this year will make the…EDC a little more aggressive [in bringing business] interest to the township.”

Council President Frank Mazzei said he thought the additional people on the Commission would be a good start.

“I think [allowing] for the expansion brings additional perspectives and insight” to the board, he said.

Mazzei also said he believes the new members’ ideas will turn into additional projects or initiatives carried out by the economic body.
