Want to Work in Jersey? You've Got to Live Here First

New Jersey First Act approved May 17.

The New Jersey First Act was ratified May 17. District 40 Senator Kevin O’Toole sponsored the legislation.

The new law requires all future public employees to establish their residence in New Jersey or move to the state within one year of taking a position. The position applies to state, county, and municipal employees; employees of school districts and institutions of higher education, and elected officials. The law also covers anyone working for political subdivisions of the state, employees of public authorities, boards, agencies, and commissions.

The law states that any person found in violation of the law will be fined $1,500. Violators have one year to make New Jersey his or her principle residency. If the requirement is not met by then the individual will be deemed “unqualified” to hold the elected office, job, or position and will be brought to state civil court.
