Assemblyman Scott Rumana Cleared of Six Ethics Charges

Legislative committee seeking clarification on seventh charge.

Republican Assemblyman Scott Rumana was cleared of allegations of six ethics violations Tuesday that had been brought against him by William Brennan, a Democratic State Assembly candidate.

“I am pleased that the committee unanimously dismissed that vast majority of Mr. Brennan’s politically motivated complaint,” Rumana said in a statement. “All the committee is left to grapple with is Mr. Brennan’s final nebulous and convoluted allegation.”

The last allegation, asks the question: Did Rumana’s alleged role in advocating for a renewable energy project in Wayne before state agencies while serving as a state legislator create an appearance of impropriety?

Rumana is chairman of the non-profit Wayne Energy Corporation (WEC). The WEC was established to oversee a renewable energy project that would have provided power to several municipal and school buildings in the township.

The Joint Legislative Committee on Ethical Standards is seeking clarification on the allegation before it discusses it at a future meeting. The committee has not set a date for the meeting yet.

A phone number for Brennan was not listed. He is running with Cassandra Lazzara in this year's general election against Rumana and David Russo.

Rumana is the Assembly’s deputy conference leader and co-chairman of the policy committee. He was mayor of Wayne from 2002 to 2007 and on the council from 1994 to 1997.
